Spend a Buck

Rodney G. Lundock’s SUPERVISOR (Skip Trial) put in a late rally to record a
neck win on Saturday in the $100,000
Spend a
Buck H. (G3)
at Calder. Trained by Emanuel Tortora, the five-year-old
gelding was steadied by jockey Aurelio Toribio Jr. in the backstretch to avoid a
fallen horse, started his run and eventually overcame B. B. Best (Yes It’s True)
and the pacesetting Apalachian Thunder (Wekiva Springs) to finish 8 1/2 furlongs
on the good main track in 1:46 4/5.

Unfortunately, the race was marred by the breakdown of Chino Charlie
(Montreal Red), who fell on the backstretch.

Sent off the 11-1 longshot in the six-horse field, Supervisor paid $25.20, $5
and $3 while starting the $79.20 exacta. B. B. Best challenged from the onset,
but couldn’t quite get to the winner, giving back $2.80 and $2.40 as the 4-5
favorite. It was another three parts of a length back to Apalachian Thunder, who
returned $3.40 at 5-1 while ending the $344.80 trifecta. Whos Crying Now (Concerto)
missed third by a nose and completed the 7-5-6-3 superfecta that was worth $953.
Lawbook (Notebook) followed by another 9 3/4 lengths. Hal’s Image (Halo’s Image)
and Dazzing Dr. Cevin (Cutlass Fax) were scratched to run in the Calder Derby
earlier on the program.

Supervisor improved his career line to 40-5-4-5 with $297,479 in earnings
while taking his first stakes victory here. The bay owns placings in three other
black-type events, including the 2003 Peter Pan S. (G2). The Florida homebred is
out of Silver Doe (Silver Buck) and counts stakes winner Silver Rail (Dispersal)
and an unnamed Montbrook weanling colt as half-siblings.
