MEGAHERTZ (GB) (Pivotal), the tiny mare with a super-sized heart, is the
odds-on favorite to win Saturday’s Yellow Ribbon S. (G1) at Santa Anita. The
Bobby Frankel trainee owns a remarkable turn of foot and easily rates our top
choice.
Megahertz won the Santa Ana H. (G2) and Santa Barbara H. (G2) (for the third
straight year) in her first two starts of the season over this course. She
captured the Beverly Hills H. (G2) at Hollywood Park in her next start, and all
three victories were in last-to-first fashion with a powerful burst of speed in
the stretch. In her most recent outing, Megahertz came running late and just
missed winning the Beverly D. S. (G1) by a neck at Arlington Park over yielding
ground, which she dislikes. Megahertz will likely make her final career start in
the October 29 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Belmont Park, so this
will likely be her final appearance under silks in Southern California. Should
she win her final two starts, divisional championship honors, which she so
richly deserves but has never won, will be hers.
AMORAMA (Fr) (Sri Pekan) also likes to come running from off the pace, but
from not as far back as Megahertz. The Julio Canani-trained filly defeated the
Frankel-trained Intercontinental (GB) (Danehill) in the John C. Mabee H. (G1)
and then was defeated by that foe in the Palomar Breeders’ Cup H. (G2) in her
last start. The dark bay lass is a multiple Grade 1 winner at nine furlongs but
has yet to win at this 10-furlong distance. She figures to complete an all-chalk
exacta.
WINENDYNME (Dynaformer) finished a close second to Megahertz in the Beverly
Hills and then a close sixth to Amorama in the Mabee before chasing Sand Springs
(Dynaformer) in the Diana S. (G1) at Saratoga and finishing fifth in her most
recent outing. The Doug O’Neill-trained filly likes to attend the early running
and could stick around for a share.
HALO OLA (Arg) (Southern Halo) dueled for the lead until midstretch in the
Beverly D. before fading to eighth, beaten six lengths. She finished third to
Megahertz in the Beverly Hills and then a close fifth to Amorama in the Mabee in
her prior two starts. Halo Ola will likely be forwardly placed and could hit the
board under new rider Rene Douglas. The lightly raced COLD COLD WOMAN (GB)
(Machiavellian) brings good form into this event and has a chance to earn a
check with continued improvement for conditioner Neil Drysdale. She will get
tested for class, though.
FLIP FLOP (Fr) (Zieten) has won two of three starts this year at one mile on
the turf against top level allowance foes but appears to be in tough with these.
She would be a surprise. California-bred SMOKEGETENYOUREYES (Smokester) may set
the early pace if sent but is hard to recommend.
