J T Alvarez III Family Trust’s homebred GOLDEN RAHY (Rahy) moved
outside turning for home and closed with a fury to take the $100,000
Carlton F.
Burke H. (G3) at Santa Anita on Sunday. Trained by Bobby Frankel, the
six-year-old finished up 12 furlongs over firm turf in 2:27 en route to a score
in his stakes debut. Amazingly the gelding was second in a claiming race last
out, but stepped up to grab the top prize under Alex Solis in this one. Let off
at 5-1 odds, the chestnut returned $12, $5 and $2.60 while keying the $20.40
exacta ($1) and $58.50 trifecta ($1).
Wild Buddy (Line in the Sand), the expected pacesetter, sat behind horses on
the rail and closed strongly to earn the place, a neck shy of the win. The bay
paid $3.20 and $2.20 at 8-5. Stage Shy (Theatrical [Ire]), a mare taking on the
boys, made a bold move turning for home but could not match strides with the top
pair late, grabbing the show at 2-1, which paid $2.20. Courtly Jazz (Dixieland
Band) made the pace and fought valiantly for the show but fell a nose short.
Star Pupil (GB) (Selkirk) and At Dawn (Robannier) rounded out the order of
finish.
Golden Rahy, who has likely seen the last of claiming races for the time
being, and moved his mark to 11-4-1-1 with earnings of $154,920 following the
score. He was bred in Kentucky and is out of the Grade 3 winning Gold Fleece
(Deputed Testamony). The gelding counts the unraced two-year-old High Speed
Goldie (Parade Ground) and an unnamed 2005 filly by Hussonet as half-sisters.
