Charles Patton’s THERECOMESATIGER (Tiger Ridge) battled slow splits before
pulling away to annex Sunday’s $174,900
Commonwealth Turf S. at Churchill Downs.
Sent off as the 7-1 third choice, the Tom Proctor-conditioned sophomore got out
early to press the pacesetting T. D. Vance (Rahy), taking over the lead from that
rival near the three-sixteenths pole and holding off Cosmonaut (Lemon Drop Kid)
en route to a 1 3/4-length victory. Therecomesatiger completed 1 1/16 miles over the good turf
in 1:43 4/5.
Sunday was the first day back for jockey Mark Guidry, who was involved in a
spill in Friday’s 10TH race when his mount bolted toward the inside and jumped
the rail just past the eighth-pole. Guidry was uninjured, but did not ride his
four mounts on Saturday.
Therecomesatiger returned $16.40, $8.60 and $5.80 while leading the $219.80
exacta. Cosmonaut gave $12.40 and $6.80 for the place at 13-1 while Drum Major (Dynaformer)
hit the wire another three parts of a length back to pay $8.60 at 11-1 and end
the $1,607.80 trifecta. Sky Conqueror (Sky Classic) finished the 2-9-8-3
superfecta ($1), which returned $8,506.40. T. D. Vance, Cosmic Kris
(Storm Creek), 3-2 favorite Rebel Rebel (Ire) (Revoque), Spring House (Chester
House) and Greater Good (Intidab) rounded out the order of finish.
The Florida homebred is out of Come Tight (Artistry [SAf]), making him a
half-brother to an unnamed weanling by Pure Precision. This was Therecomesatiger’s fourth win in five attempts and
he now shows earnings of
$173,238. He placed third in the Bryan Station S. last out.
