Pool 1 of the 2006 Kentucky Derby Future Wager will open its four-day run on
Thursday, and the mutuel field, which consists of all three-year-olds other than
the 23 individual betting interests, has been installed as the solid 4-1
favorite on the morning line by Churchill Downs’ oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. The mutuel
field has been favored in the opening Kentucky Derby Future Pool in each year
since Churchill introduced the wager in 1999.

(Stephen Got Even) at 8-1 is the only horse listed at single-digit odds. Grade 1
winners FIRST SAMURAI (Giant’s Causeway) and BROTHER DEREK (Benchmark) come next
on the line at 10-1.
“Although we have some very strong individual horses in Stevie Wonderboy,
First Samurai and Private Vow (Broken Vow), the closest thing to a sure bet in
the Thoroughbred racing is that Derby fans will favor the mutuel field in Pool 1
of the Derby Future Wager,” Battaglia said. “The opportunity to claim ‘bragging
rights’ by picking the Derby winner months before the race is a big part of the
fun, but the Derby picture is always wide open at this time of the year and the
mutuel field should again be a very popular bet as Pool 1 gets underway.”
Wagering opens at noon (EST) Thursday and will continue until 6 p.m. on
Sunday. Winning payouts in all three Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools are based
on the odds that are in place on each wagering interest at the conclusion of
each respective pool. There are no refunds. Pool 2 will take place March 2-5,
and Pool 3 will run April 6-9.
