The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager is back for its fourth year with three
installments scheduled in 2006. Pool 1 gets underway Thursday, and the mutuel
field of all other three-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual interests
is the 7-2 favorite on the morning line. Champion two-year-old filly and
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner FOLKLORE (Tiznow) is the
shortest-priced horse at 8-1.
“The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager has been a bit different from the Derby
Future bet in that we have had some very strong fillies, such as champions
Halfbridled and Sweet Catomine, that appeared so dominant early on that they
were considered as strong candidates to challenge the boys in the Kentucky
Derby,” said Mike Battaglia, Churchill Downs’ oddsmaker. “This year’s group has
a two-year-old filly champion in Folklore that has already run and lost as a
three-year-old, and the other individual fillies in the pool have yet to really
stamp themselves as future stars.”
The four-day Kentucky Oaks Future Wager runs concurrently with the Kentucky
Derby Future Wager. Betting opens at noon (EST) Thursday and will continue until
6:30 p.m. on Sunday, a half-hour after the closing of the Kentucky Derby Future
Wager. Winning payouts in all three Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pools
are based on the odds that are in place on each wagering interest at the
conclusion of each respective pool. There are no refunds. Pool 2 will take place
March 2-5, and Pool 3 will run April 6-9.
