An outrider pony at Laurel Park has tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus
(EHV-1), according to the Maryland Department of Agriculture. This latest
development follows on the heels of the quarantine placed on Pimlico by
the Maryland Jockey Club Saturday and another horse testing positive at Penn
National in Pennsylvania on Friday.
So far, 11 horses at Pimlico have shown symptoms of the virus, which can
cause respiratory and neurological problems. Two horses have been euthanized and
three barns are currently affected, including the Detention Barn, which is being
used to isolate eight of the positive horses.
The horse who tested positive at Laurel has been moved to Pimlico and
isolated until further testing can be carried out. So far, the horse has shown
no signs of the disease.
