The Outrider’s Barn at Turfway Park was included in the quarantine on Friday
after diagnostic results revealed that one of the ponies has the herpes virus.
Seven horses are stabled in the barn, which joins Barn 26 at the track under quarantine for equine herpes virus.
The pony had a fever earlier in the week, but showed no neurological signs of
the virus. He was isolated from the general horse population at Turfway as soon
as the fever was detected. More diagnostic samples will be collected from the
Outrider’s Barn Monday evening.
Also on Friday, samples taken from horses in Barn 26 on Wednesday came back,
showing that 11 horses that had previously tested positive were found to be
negative for the virus. Five other horses in the barn are still positive for
the virus, including a filly who had previously been hospitalized but released
on Wednesday.
The 11 horses whose tests came back negative will be allowed limited and
restricted access to the track for training beginning as early as Sunday.
More tests will be run Wednesday evening on horses in Barn 26.
