Overall numbers up at Barretts

Hollywood Park maiden winner DANISH DESSERT (Regal Classic), who was cataloged
in foal to In Excess (Ire) on an April 27 cover, fetched the top price of
$44,000 from NW Management at the final session of the Barretts January Mixed
Sale in Pomona, California, on Tuesday. She was consigned by NexStar Ranch,
agent, and sold as Hip No. 490.

The 13-year-old producing mare is a half-sister to stakes winners Ever Steady
(Steady Growth) and Sparrow Lake (Apalachee), who is the dam of stakes winner
Dreamy Maiden (Meadowlake). In addition, she is a half-sister to the dams of
Canadian champion Bruce’s Mill (Steady Growth) and multiple stakes winner and
$805,365 earner Texcess (In Excess [Ire]).

For the day, 201 horses changed hands for $1,077,700, a 29.6 percent decline
from the same session last year when 240 horses brought $1,529,800. The average
price fell 15.9 percent, from $6,374 to $5,362, while the median price remained
even at $3,000.

For the two-day auction, the sales company reported 441 horses sold for
$3,481,300, which represents a 8.3 percent increase compared to a year ago when
493 horses sold for $3,214,300. The average price rose 21.1 percent,
from $6,520 to $7,894, while the median price remained unchanged at $3,500.
