Carl Van Burger went to $300,000 to acquire multiple stakes winner TEXCESS
(In Excess [Ire]) at the first session of the Barretts January Mixed Sale in
Pomona, California. Consigned as Hip No. 45A by NexStar Ranch, agent, the bay
four-year-old gelding is out of the Regal Classic mare Danish Alamode and is a
half-brother to the stakes-placed winner Gimme the Willys (Walter Willy [Ire]).
His second dam, Stray Flight (Viceregal), produced stakes winners Ever Steady
(Steady Growth) and Sparrow Lake (Apalachee), the dam of stakes winner Dreamy
Maiden (Meadowlake). Stray Flight is also the granddam of 1994 Canadian champion three-year-old colt Bruce’s Mill (Steady
Growth).

Texcess captured the Delta Jackpot and California Cup Juvenile S. and placed
in the San Rafael S. (G2), Barretts Juvenile S. and San Mateo Mile S. He has a
record of 12-3-3-1, $805,365. Texcess was
previously sold for $85,000 at the 2004 Barretts May Sale of Two-Year-Olds in
Training.

Hip 50A, PAPA TO KINZIE (Boston Harbor) sold to Brian Kahn, agent, for
$280,000 as the second-highest seller of the day. Consigned by Havens Bloodstock
Agency, agent, the five-year-old chestnut mare, who was cataloged as a racing or
broodmare prospect, is out of 1990 Golden Rod S. (G3) winner Fancy Ribbons
(Blushing Groom [Fr]), a half-sister to 1986 Canadian champion two-year-old Blue
Finn (Empery) and the multiple stakes-placed winner Pixie Place (L’Enjoleur).

Papa to Kinzie has earned $111,484 from a record of 9-3-0-2. She finished
third in the 2004 Santa Ynez S. (G2) and C.E.R.F. H. Her most recent
start was a sixth-place outing in the Palos Verdes H. (G2) on January 21. This
was Papa to Kinzie’s third trip through the sales ring, previously selling for
$77,000 at the 2002 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and $160,000 at the 2003 Barretts March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in
Training.

For the session, 239 horses sold for $2,402,600. This was up 42.6 percent from
the comparative session of 2005 when 253 sold for a total of $1,684,500. The
average price increased 51 percent, from $6,658 to $10,053, while median price
remained steady at $4,000.
