Bearing Point Ventures and Paula Capestro’s INDY WILDCAT (A.P. Indy) was
never far back in the early running of Sunday’s $100,000
Borderland Derby at Sunland Park and just managed to get up at the wire to
score by a head under Michael Baze. The Capestro-trained sophomore was sent off
the 9-1 fourth choice, returning $20, $10.20 and $5.60 to his loyal backers.
Disappearing Trick (Favorite Trick) quickly grabbed the advantage when the
gates opened, leaping out to lead through splits of :22 3/5, :45 3/5, 1:10 3/5
and 1:37 2/5. Our Father (Honour and Glory) and Indy Wildcat vied for second,
with the eventual winner grabbing that spot through the half-mile. He narrowed
the distance between himself and the front runner and started his run coming out
two wide around the final turn.
With Baze urging him on, Indy Wildcat fought off the late rally of Wait in
Line (Line in the Sand) to record the win over the fast track, stopping the
teletimer for 8 1/2 furlongs in 1:44 4/5. The runner-up, off at 17-1, paid
$15.80 and $6 for his effort while ending the $157.80 exacta ($1). Disappearing
Trick, another half-length back in third, was best of the rest and gave back
$4.40 at 5-1. The 7-1-2 trifecta ($1) was worth $1,198.30.
Belligerence (Robyn Dancer), Our Father, Might Be Hooked (Mighty), El
Salvador (Arch), 6-5 favorite Doctor Decherd (Louis Quatorze), 9-5 second choice
Plagiarist (Souvenir Copy) and Beck and Call (Lemon Drop Kid) finished out the
order under the wire.
Indy Wildcat came into Sunday’s event with three races under his girth but no
wins. He exited the stakes with a 4-1-0-1 mark and $66,840 in earnings.
Bred in Kentucky by Kathleen Ann Schonefeld, Indy Wildcat is out of the
unraced Storm Cat mare Pacheca, who is also the dam of a juvenile colt named
Samurai Storm (Fusaichi Pegasus) and an unnamed yearling filly by Mineshaft.
