Sonia Chapman & Stuart Tsujimoto’s MISTY ROSETTE (Stormin Fever) challenged
Somethinaboutbetty (Forestry) in the opening quarter of :21 3/5 during
Saturday’s $100,000
Old Hat S.
(G3) at Gulfstream Park, before taking over through a half in :44 and going
on to score in the 6 1/2-furlong test by four easy lengths. Sent off the 5-1
fourth choice in the six-horse field, the James Chapman trainee paid out $12.40,
$6.20 and $4.20 to her supporters.
Somethinaboutbetty quickly moved to the front when the gates opened, but
Misty Rosette wasn’t far behind. Circling her rival on the backstretch, the bay
miss easily took over pacesetting duties over the sloppy track and loped home
under urging from jockey Sebastian Madrid to stop the clock in 1:16.
“She’s been running like this all along,” Chapman said. “We haven’t even
asked her to open up yet. Our goal with her is to make the (May 5) Kentucky Oaks
(G1). We’ll sit down and see the schedule and see where we go from here.”
Swap Fliparoo (Exchange Rate) saved ground on the inside before also swinging
around the early leader and grabbing second to return $6 and $2.80 at 6-1. Smart
N Pretty (Elusive Quality) was another 1 3/4-lengths back in third and a head up
on 9-5 favorite Yachats (Forest Camp), giving back $4 for third at 9-2. The $1
exotics were worth $43.60 (exacta) and $187.20 (trifecta). Miraculous Miss (Mr.
Greeley) finished 1 3/4 lengths behind Yachats and was followed by
Somethinaboutbetty in last.
Misty Rosette broke her maiden by six lengths in her debut before adding the
Sandpiper S. to her resume prior to this one. Now three-for-three, the chestnut
miss has earned $98,700. Bred by Brereton C. Jones in Kentucky, Misty Rosette is
out of the stakes-winning Exclusive Rosette (Ecliptical) and counts among her
full siblings last year’s Lazaro Barrera Memorial S. (G2) victor, Storm Wolf,
and an unnamed juvenile colt.
Misty Rosette brought $15,000 as a Keeneland September yearling before RNAing
as a Barretts May two-year-old.
