Eight sprinters will head to the gate on Saturday for the $300,000 Carter H.
(G1) at Aqueduct. The seven-furlong contest is highlighted by Breeders’ Cup
Sprint (G1) winner SILVER TRAIN (Old Treiste), but in order to look for more
value, we will go with Grade 1 hero MASS MEDIA (Touch Gold).
Trained by Bobby Frankel, the five-year-old comes off a four-month layoff
after finishing second to Purge in the Cigar Mile H. (G1) over this same surface
in late November. Mass Media owns a good late kick, an attribute which should
come in handy in light of the expected hot pace up front. The dark bay will get a jockey
switch to Ramon Dominguez
Silver Train will attempt to improve off a disappointing seventh in the
Richter Scale Breeders’ Cup Sprint Championship H. (G2). In order to help his
charge’s chances, trainer Richard Dutrow has also entered speedsters KAZOO
(Tabasco Cat) and CALL THE LORD (Lord Carson). Dutrow has been fairly successful recently, winning with five of
his last 13 starters. Edgar Prado has the call on Silver Train.
BISHOP COURT HILL (Holy Bull) owns good early speed which should make him a
contender unless he gets caught up in a speed duel. The Todd Pletcher charge
has earned triple-digit BRIS Speed figures in his past three outings, including
a 112 when annexing the Paumonok H. two back. He was not able to catch up to
Kazoo in the Toboggan H. (G3) last out, but he should make a good showing with Jose
Santos in the saddle.
HAPPY HUNTING (Seeking the Gold) has won five of his past six, his
last four in a row, including a victory in the Aqueduct H. (G3) in which he was
on the lead for much of the way. The five-year-old chestnut comes off a two-month break and has been working solidly
for conditioner Shug McGaughey during that time. Mike Smith will ride. SIR GREELEY
(Mr. Greeley) has proved victorious in two of three over this surface and was a
neck second in the Richter Scale last out. The four-year-old gelding has been
working forwardly for James Jerkens and will be a threat up front.
Kazoo was a four-length winner in the Toboggan, drawing away when asked by
Richard Migliore, who will grab the mount Saturday. The chestnut earned 100 and
115 E1 and E2 ratings in each of his last two and received a 107 Speed figure for the Toboggan. Given free rein in the front, the eight-year-old could upset plans
for Silver Train. BIG APPLE DADDY (Precise End) owns good late speed and could
get up for part. Call the Lord impressed last out versus allowance/optional
claiming rivals, but could be outclassed in this one.
