Raymond J. Larkin’s SIPHON CITY (Siphon [Brz]) went right to the lead and
then held sway by 1 1/2 lengths over Congrats (A.P. Indy) to take Monday’s
$100,000 Memorial Day H. (G3)
at Calder. Trained by Daniel Hurtak and ridden by
Elvis Trujillo, Siphon City set fractions of :23 3/5, :47 3/5, 1:12 2/5 and 1:38
4/5 before completing the 1 1/16-mile distance on a fast track in 1:45 4/5.
Congrats made a run at the winner in the stretch, but had to settle for second,
7 3/4 lengths in front of Bob’s Proud Moment (Proud and True).

As the slight 2-1 favorite, Siphon City paid $6.80, $3.60 and $3.40.
Congrats, who was making his first start for trainer Kathleen O’Connell, paid
$3.60 and $3.80 as the 5-2 second choice. Bob’s Proud Moment, off at 23-1, paid
$6.80 to show. The exacta gave back $31.80, trifecta $218.80, and the 8-6-5-4 superfecta, with Notgonagetemtoday (D. J. Cat) in fourth, returned
$775.00.

Gigawatt (Wild Again) and Twilight Road (Cahill Road), who were both 5-2,
finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while Hal’s Image completed the order of
finish. Whos Crying Now (Concerto), Mister Fotis (Diligence) and Broadway View
(Broad Brush) were scratched.

Siphon City scored a front-running, eighth-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile
Sumter S. at Calder in his previous start. The four-year-old now has a record of
16-6-2-2 and $184,016 in earnings. The chestnut is out of the stakes-placed
Carson City mare Carsona, who has an unnamed yearling colt and an unnamed
weanling colt by Yankee Victor.
