Eleven turf distaffers are set to go in Sunday’s $150,000 Yerba Buena
Breeders’ Cup H. (G3) at Golden Gate Fields, and DREAMS COME TRUE (Fr) (Zafonic)
looks poised to take her second straight win of the year. Trained by Bobby
Frankel, the bay mare rallied from the inside to capture the Sun City H. in her
five-year-old bow last out, earning a 107 BRIS E2 Pace rating and vindicating
her 6-5 favorite status. She stretches out to the 1 1/8-mile distance over which
she captured an allowance last season and will have Omar Berrio back in the saddle
for Sunday’s event. Dreams Come True might offer a nice price for the win.
HALLOWED DREAM (Ire) (Alhaarth) broke her maiden in late December at Santa
Anita, before returning to score in an allowance and allowance/optional claimer
in her last two. Her first race of 2006 came at the nine-furlong distance, and
she rallied from near the back in that one to win by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire.
The Ben Cecil-conditioned four-year-old posted a 105 BRIS Late Pace rating for
that one two back and could take this one with a game late rally. Dennis Carr
has the call.
DREAM LADY (Old Trieste) hasn’t finished worse than second from her past
seven races, and most recently captured a nine-furlong Santa Anita allowance by
3 1/4 lengths while leading from gate to wire. Also trained by Frankel, the bay
miss has earned consistent BRIS Speed ratings throughout her career and finished
second in her only stakes race, the Lake George S. (G3) last year at Saratoga.
She could break through here with a first black-type victory under Jose Valdivia
Jr.
ELEANOR ROSE (In Excess [Ire]) is another consistent performer, running third
or better in her past 10 races. She earned a 103 Speed figure for her last race,
an easy six-length pacesetting win in the off-the-turf Work the Crowd H. at
Golden Gate, and
could easily take this one if she gets away with another uncontested pace.
Martin Garcia will be back in the irons. MIDWIFE (Family Calling) finished third
in this event last year, but wasn’t seen again until a late December allowance
at Santa Anita in which she was unplaced. She didn’t do so badly in her 2006 bow, just 4 3/4 lengths back in
seventh in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf. The bay mare was a nice
third in the American Beauty H. last out and could offer a nice surprise in this
one.
MARLA BAY (Skip Away) returns to the turf for the first time since last June.
She was just a half-length back in second in this event last season and will
probably be tough in the top three this time around as well. SKY DREAMS (Sky
Classic) put together two straight wins on the main track, by a total of
14 lengths, prior to finishing second in the off-the-turf Half Moon Bay S. last
out. She also earned triple-digit Late Pace figures in two of her last three
outings and has competed well on the turf in the past. Consider for the exotics.
STRONG FAITH (Pioneering) was the winner of the Half Moon Bay and will try to
keep her four-race win streak going here. The former claimer has been going well
of late and could close strongly to make a race of it.
SECRET CORSAGE (Lost Soldier) finished well back in a Golden Gate stakes
last out in March and might need a race off the layoff before trying these. PAPILLON
ROUGE (Chi) (Golden Voyager) owns lower numbers than others in here and might
not be able to keep up. DREAM’S (Chi) (Sam M.) hasn’t been able to challenge
against U.S. stakes company of late. We’ll go against.
