it will mark the first time in the 23-year history of the Breeders’ Cup that a
full brother and sister competed in the event in the same year.
Breeders’ Cup Limited and six of the nation’s
premier tracks announced Tuesday that they will launch a set of officially
sanctioned Breeders’ Cup qualifying races in 2007. The new “Breeders’ Cup
Challenge” will be highlighted by its “Win and You’re In” provision, with the
winner of each of the 24 Challenge races automatically qualifying for the
corresponding divisional race in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
“The Breeders’ Cup Challenge creates a framework that will strengthen
mainstream understanding of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and its
position as the most important and prestigious day of racing,” Breeders’ Cup
Limited Chairman Bill Farish said.
The “Win and You’re In” races will take place from July to October and
features many of the country’s biggest races, including the Arlington Million
(G1), Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), Pacific Classic (G1) and Spinster S. (G1). The
participating tracks are Arlington Park, Belmont Park, Del Mar, Keeneland, Oak
Tree at Santa Anita and Saratoga.
ZANJERO (Cherokee Run), the lone also-eligible for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
(G1), is entered in Thursday’s 7TH race at Churchill Downs, a 1 1/16-mile
allowance race.
