INSPIRATIONAL (Lord at War [Arg]), Hip No. 437, attracted a bid of $230,000
to top Adena Springs’ Annual Broodmare Sale held at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington,
Kentucky, on Thursday evening. Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings bought the
unraced eight-year-old mare, who is in foal to Sligo Bay (Ire) on a May 25
cover. A 2007 no-guarantee season to Adena stallions North Light (Ire) or
Milwaukee Brew was included with the purchase.
Inspirational has produced two winners from two foals of racing age. Her
three-year-old is the stakes-placed The Niagara Queen (Langfuhr), runner-up in
the October 7 Carotene S. at Woodbine.
Out of the winning Fappiano mare Warna Corna, Inspirational is a half-sister
to multiple stakes winner Cascade Corona (Pine Bluff), Grade 2-placed Son’s
Corona (Son of Briartic) and stakes-placed Basin City Ben (Present Value). Warna
Corna is herself a half-sister to Grade 3 winners Casual Lies (Lear Fan) and Le
Famo (Lear Fan) and a full sister to stakes-placed, stakes producer Dearly Bred.
This is the family of current stakes winner Morner (Broken Vow).
The next priciest was NAUGHTY MAMBO (Kingmambo), who went to Winchester Farm
for $125,000. Cataloged as Hip 459, the eight-year-old mare is in foal to North
Light on a May 8 cover. A 2007 no-guarantee season to Adena stallions Giacomo or
Milwaukee Brew was included with the purchase.
A winner with $137,026 in earnings from three seasons of racing, Naughty
Mambo is a daughter of the stakes-winning Naughty Notions (Relaunch), who has
also produced the stakes-placed Wild Notions (Wild Again). Naughty Notions is a
half-sister to the dam of Grade 3 victress Hula Queen (Irish River [Fr]) and
Group 3 heroine Loving Pride (Quiet American). She hails from the female line of
English champion and sire Zilzal (Nureyev) as well as multiple Grade 1 winner
Awe Inspiring (Slew o’ Gold).
On Thursday night, 88 horses were sold for a total of $2,313,500, a rise of
4.9 percent compared to the 2005 sale, when 56 realized $2,206,000. The average
price of $26,290 dropped 33.3 percent from $39,393 a year ago, while the median
plummeted 40.3 percent, from $31,000 to $18,500.
