Grade 1 winner SUMMERLY (Summer Squall), who was excluded from the Breeders’
Cup Distaff (G1), will run in the $300,000 Falls City H. (G2) at Churchill Downs
on Thanksgiving Day.
The four-year-old filly took a trip through the sales ring on Sunday at Fasig-Tipton
in Lexington, Kentucky, but trainer Scott Blasi said Summerly was returned to
his barn at Churchill Downs following the auction and is now set to run
at least one more time under the Twin Spires. As a three-year-old, Summerly won
the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.
“WinStar Farm bought her for $3.3 million and brought her back to me,” Blasi
said.
Summerly raced under the colors of Winchell Thoroughbreds throughout her
career. Blasi said the Falls City would likely be her final race before she
starts a new career as a WinStar broodmare.
“This probably will be it, I’m guessing, but I haven’t discussed it with
(Racing Manager) Elliott (Walden) or (President and CEO) Doug Cauthen yet,”
Blasi said. “Right now we’re pointing her toward the Falls City and I’m excited
to have her back in the barn, and I’m sure Churchill is excited for her to run.”

In her only other start at Churchill Downs, Summerly finished third in the 2004
Golden Rod S. (G2). The chestnut has won six of 13 starts and earned $891,633.
