HYSTERICALADY (Distorted Humor) was an easy four-length winner of last year’s
Humana Distaff H. (G1) and will go for a second straight score in the $300,000
event at Churchill Downs on Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (G1) undercard.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, the chestnut mare began the year with a fourth
in the Santa Monica H. (G1) after ending her four-year-old campaign a game neck
second in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). She captured the Azeri S. (G3) in her
most recent race but bypassed the next logical step in the Apple Blossom H.
(G1), both at Oaklawn Park. She’ll get Rafael Bejarano, aboard for last year’s
Humana Distaff score, in the saddle on Saturday and will get a four-pound weight
break from 124-pound highweight INTANGAROO (Orientate).
The Gary Sherlock-conditioned Intangaroo was the nose winner in the Santa
Monica in her stakes debut, then just missed by a half-length most recently in
the Las Flores H. (G3). She’ll be making her first start outside of California
in the seven-furlong Humana Distaff and will bring jockey Alonso Quinonez along
for the ride.
SUGAR SWIRL (Touch Gold) carries a four-race win skein into this one,
beginning the streak in last year’s Very Subtle S. for trainer Bobby
Frankel. Transferred after that one to Brian Lynch, she’s reeled off scores in
the First Lady H. (G3), Hurricane Bertie H. (G3) and Shirley Jones H. (G2) so
far this season, winning by a combined 16 3/4 lengths in 2008. Javier Castellano, aboard in those past three races, has the call.
Other contenders in the nine-horse field include multiple Grade 2 heroine
MIRACULOUS MISS (Mr. Greeley), who ran third in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial
Dash S. (G1) against the boys last out, and MISS MACY SUE (Trippi), an 11
3/4-length allowance/optional claiming winner most recently.
Hystericalady will lead the post parade to the gate, followed by CHANGE UP
(Distorted Humor), Kent Desormeaux, 118; GRAEME SIX (Graeme Hall), Julien
Leparoux, 120; Miss Macy Sue, Eusebio Razo Jr., 118; Sugar Swirl, 122; WINDYINDY
(A.P. Indy), Calvin Borel, 118; Miraculous Miss, Jeremy Rose, 118; BARONESS
THATCHER (Johannesburg), John Velazquez, 118; and Intangaroo.
