OAKS THEY SAID IT

Proud Spell was an emphatic winner

“We don’t think it helped us. We didn’t like it in the Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile
Fillies [G1] at
Monmouth). She can handle any kind of surface and actually Churchill’s track
when it gets wet is very good. When it gets water on it, it’s very good.”
—Trainer Larry Jones
commenting on whether he thought the wet track aided PROUD SPELL (Proud
Citizen)
“We got a good break and I worked
my
way over and saved the ground that I wanted to in the first turn. Then I got the
position that we were looking for, a stalk and pounce kind of trip with a target
to run at. That’s what I got. At the top of the lane my filly ran all out and I
just couldn’t catch up to the winner. That was it.”
—Jockey Rajiv Maragh on his
trip aboard runner-up LITTLE BELLE (A.P. Indy)
|
“I didn’t go into this race
wanting
to be on the lead, but nobody took it so I went. I got over and kicked some mud
in Little Belle’s face and I thought that might deter her. My filly was relaxed;
she was running easy on the backstretch. Just galloping. Then when I asked her
she gave me a run for about a sixteenth of a mile and they just went by me. I
don’t think the distance beat her today. She can run that far. I think she just
got beat by good fillies today.”

pacesetter BSHARPSONATA (Pulpit)

“It pretty much played out the way
we
thought it would with us ending up on the lead. She ran really good. She just
got tired today, no excuses, and my hat’s off to the winner, who was best. We’ve
been through this type of environment before with Xtra Heat in the Breeders’
Cup, but it was exciting to go through.”
—Trainer Tim Salzman on
Bsharpsonata and his experience participating in the Kentucky Oaks (G1)
“I had a great trip, just not
enough horse. I don’t think she handled the going real well. It was a little
thick for her out there, a little deep and wet. But she’s a nice filly. She’s
going to get nicer.”
