TO BE SURPRISED (Redoute’s Choice), a
three-quarter sister to Australian champion sprinter and top sire Exceed and Excel
(Danehill), attracted a sales record final
bid of A$1.3 million at Sunday’s Magic Millions August Thoroughbred Sale.
From the consignment of leading Queensland-based nursery Racetree, as agent, the
seven-year-old mare was purchased by Patinack Farm and is in foal to Zabeel.
“She is a really wonderful prospect,” Patinack Farm’s Rick Connelly said
of To Be Surprised. “She’s a three-quarter sister to Exceed and Excel — one of
the top young stallions at the present time. We’re getting together a great line
up of mares and To Be Surprised will fit in nicely. We will get her home and
then decide which of our stallions she will visit.”
During Sunday’s action,
129 horses sold for A$3,709,800 and an average of A$28,758. The clearance rate
was 87 percent.
“Breeders and vendors are now realizing that sales such as this
are a fantastic place to offer their quality stock — and their entries are
competed over strongly by astute buyers,” Magic Millions Managing Director
David Chester said. “To have a broodmare sell for A$1.3 million today was a real
highlight. A mare with her page and covering is rarely offered in this part of
the world.”
