Two fillies, the unraced four-year-old SWEETPEA (Stravinsky) and an unnamed
juvenile by Orientate, each brought a final bid of $50,000 to lead all offerings
at the Barretts January Mixed Sale in Pomona, California, on Monday.
Mark S. Tatch scooped up Sweetpea, a half-sister to the stakes-winning Just
For Keeps (Broken Vow), who was consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent for
Barry and Judith Becker. The Florida-bred is is out of the winning Angel Kate
(Mt. Livermore), a half-sister to multiple Grade 3 victor For Really (Buckaroo)
and stakes winners Saskya (Maria’s Mon), August Queen (Sovereign Dancer) and
Return to Quarters (Fit to Fight). Sweetpea’s second dam, the stakes-winning
August Days (In Reality), is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Due Diligence (Stevward).
Sweetpea toured the ring as Hip No. 27.
The co-sales topper, Hip 86, was also consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency,
agent. The dark bay Kentucky-bred, purchased by Kjell H. Qvale, is out of the
winning Carson City mare Miss City Princess, who is also the dam of stakes
winner Miss Bridget Jones (Peaks and Valleys). This is the extended family of
1985 Horse of the Year Spend a Buck (Buckaroo), 1999 Irish One Thousand Guineas
(Ire-G1) heroine Hula Angel (Woodman) and Grade 2 queen Spice Island (Tabasco
Cat).
On Monday, 202 horses sold for $1,232,400, a decline of 44.6 percent compared
to last year when 354 horses sold for $2,225,900 during the two-day sale. The
average was down only 3 percent, from $6,288 to $6,101, while the median
increased from $3,200 to $3,600, a rate of 12.5 percent.
