An evenly matched field of 10 will travel about 1 1/16 miles over the Fair
Grounds lawn in Saturday’s $100,000 Colonel E. R. Bradley H. (G3).
WINDWARD ISLANDS (Cozzene), one of two for trainer Mark Frostad, gets the nod in
here. The lightly raced five-year-old has always been thought of well and showed
his ability when a closing third in the Sky Classic S. (Can-G2) as a sophomore,
and followed that by getting beat just four lengths in the deep Canadian
International (Can-G1) in the same year. Off for nearly one year, the gray
rolled to an easy allowance win at Keeneland this fall and ran a pair of decent
races versus better, including a fourth in the Sky Classic. Corey Lanerie has the
mount on the Kentucky-bred, who should be in midpack early prior to picking off
his rivals in the stretch.
TEND (Dynaformer) has won three straight for Albert Stall Jr., including a
game score in the Sam’s Town S. last out at Delta Downs. The well-bred colt has
run at a high level ever since entering the Stall shedrow, and we think his
pedigree, jockey and trainer can help him overcome his lack of a prior grass
outing. Julien Leparoux will be atop the four-year-old.
FRENCH BERET (Broad Brush) won this race last year for Frostad, but the
gelding has just three career wins from 33 starts. The bay has shown an affinity
for this sod, however, and he’s another who could make a run for a top-three
placing with clear sailing.
RED ROCK CREEK (Numerous) owns a solid 31-11-7-4 turf mark and has held up
well when facing stakes company for Steve Asmussen, so we give the gelding a
chance at an upset in here. The consistent grass performer was a closing third
in the Dallas Turf Cup H. (G3) last spring and secured the same spot in the Remington Green
S. three prior. Shaun Bridgmohan has the assignment.
The seven-year-old CLASSIC CAMPAIGN (Rahy) continues to fight on at a high
level for Bill Mott, including a victory in the Buddy Diliberto Memorial H. over
the main track here most recently. The consistent sort has not won a grass race
in more than 15 months, but he always gives it his best and could threaten
for a piece of the pie under Brian Hernandez Jr. WISE RIVER (Belong to Me) shows two wins from three starts over this lawn and
comes in off a fine, three-quarter of a length win in advance of this for Clark
Hanna. The six-year-old has been first or second in six of his last seven and
should be in the mix early under Francisco Torres.
Multiple Grade 3 winner EMBOSSED (Ire) (Mark of Esteem [Ire]) has not visited the
winners’ circle since May of 2007 and will be racing at a distance clearly less
than his best, so we’ll restrict his use to the gimmicks for Andrew McKeever. GOLDEN YANK (Yankee Gentleman) finished a good second in both of his career
tries on the lawn, and the gelding comes in this one in great form for Gary
Thomas. We’re concerned that the bay has never won on the green, and we’re
troubled with the fact that he’s only faced runners in his own age group in
advance of his four-year-old bow. Maybe later, but not now for this gelding.
ACTING ZIPPY (City Zip) was a decent third in the Woodchopper S. last out in
his turf debut for trainer William Bennett. The chestnut gelding has some class
to him and might ultimately perform better on the green than the main oval, but
this assignment might be a bit much for him at this stage of his career. We could never figure out PROM SHOES (Include), who appears to be a budding
star at times yet looks quite ordinary on other occasions. The bay was a smart
turf allowance winner two prior, but he lacks the grassy credentials of these
and we’ll let him beat us on this day.
