With just 175 sold for $678,900 during Wednesday’s open session of the Ocala
Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2009 Winter Mixed Sale, the final day of the sale saw
206 less horses bring a winning bid than last year, when 381 were purchased for $2,493,900
over two open sessions. Wednesday’s one-day open session saw an average of
$3,879 and a median of $2,200. The two open days last season resulted in a
$6,546 average and $4,500 median. The buyback percentage in 2008 was 29.1
percent compared to 32.4 percent this year.

Hip No. 265, the first to enter the ring during the sale finale, brought the
highest price of the entire session. Selling for $33,000 to Diane Moore,
Darkside Racing, the yearling filly by Macho Uno was consigned by Beth Bayer,
agent. Out of multiple stakes-placed Dance Kat (Katowice), the bay lass counts
multiple Grade 2 winner Terlingua (Secretariat) as her fourth dam, who is best
known for producing influential sire Storm Cat.
