The entry for all other three-year-olds was bet down to 9-2 favoritism at the
conclusion of Pool 2 of the 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager on Sunday evening.
“All others” had closed as the 9-5 favorite in Pool 1, which ran from February
12-15.
Undefeated DUNKIRK (Unbridled’s Song) headed the individual interests when
closing at 7-1 in his first appearance in the Future Wager. The Todd Pletcher
trainee broke his maiden by 5 3/4 lengths on January 24 at Gulfstream Park, then
returned at that track on February 19 to school allowance rivals by 4 3/4
lengths. He’s expected to make his stakes debut in the March 28 Florida Derby
(G1).
Louisiana Derby (G2) hero FRIESAN FIRE (A.P. Indy) tied with stablemate OLD
FASHIONED (Unbridled’s Song) as the next individual betting interest, both
closing at 8-1 in Pool 2.
The Larry Jones trainees were 18-1
and 7-1, respectively, in Pool 1. Friesan Fire received a boost following his
easy victory in Saturday’s Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. Not only did he
become the first horse since Dixieland Heat in 1993 to complete a sweep of the
major three-year-old stakes at the New Orleans oval after opening the year with
victories in the Lecomte S. (G3) and Risen Star S. (G3), the bay colt recorded
the largest margin of victory since 1963 in Saturday’s 96th running of the
Louisiana Derby. Old Fashioned didn’t fare as well as his stablemate when going
in Saturday’s Rebel S. (G2) at Oaklawn, suffering his first career loss when
running second to 56-1 longshot Win Willy (Monarchos).
A six-length score in the February 28 Sham S. (G3) helped propel THE PAMPLEMOUSSE (Kafwain) to close at 9-1 on the Future Wager. The Julio Canani
charge is expected to race next in the April 4 Santa Anita Derby (G1), where he
will clash with Grade 1 star PIONEEROF THE NILE (Empire
Maker), who captured Saturday’s San Felipe S. (G2) for trainer Bob Baffert and
was bet down to 12-1 in the Future Wager.
I WANT REVENGE (Stephen Got Even), an 8 1/2-length hero of the Gotham S. (G3) on
March 7, closed at 10-1.
The second pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager was the first in the bet’s
11-year history to offer exacta wagering along with its traditional $2 minimum
win bet. Exacta wagering accounted for $104,017 of Pool 2’s total betting of
$380,420. The combined wagering total was the fifth-highest in Pool 2 since the Future
Wager was introduced in 1999.
The third and final Kentucky Derby Future Wager is scheduled for April 2-5.
