LIME RICKEY (Lemon Drop Kid) will be pointed toward the $750,000 Wood
Memorial S. (G1) at Aqueduct on April 4, according to Dogwood President W.
Cothran “Cot” Campbell.
Lime Rickey has $131,107 in purse earnings from a record of 9-1-4-3. The
Kentucky-bred has run second in three consecutive grass stakes at Gulfstream
Park this winter: the Palm Beach S. (G3), Hallandale Beach S. and Dania Beach S.
The colt has yet to race on dirt, though.
“We don’t know how he will take to dirt in a race, but now is the time to
find out, and the mile-and-an-eighth Wood Memorial is a spot that will test him
pretty keenly,” Campbell explained.
Lime Rickey will ship to Belmont Park by air on April 1, accompanied by a
large number of other Florida horses, including some that he will likely run
against in the Wood.
“We’re trying to get Javier Castellano or Cornelio Velasquez to ride our
colt,” Campbell said. “If Jupiter aligns with Mars in a precise manner we could
get to the (Kentucky) Derby (G1) this year. Lime Rickey is a solid grass
specialist, but he has a dirt pedigree and is a game colt — and if he moves up
big time he might get to Churchill Downs.”
Lime Rickey is trained by Frank Alexander.
