Stream Cat sails to victory in Tokyo City

Last updated: 3/28/09 8:58 PM

Fab Oak Stable et al’s STREAM CAT (Black Minnaloushe) was content to settle
next to last during the early running of Saturday’s $100,000
Tokyo
City Cup H. (G3)
at Santa Anita, but was in front when it mattered — at the
wire. With jockey Joseph Talamo aboard, the Patrick Biancone-trained
six-year-old managed to have his neck in front on the wire to complete the 1
1/2-mile Pro-Ride marathon in 2:31 4/5.

Zappa (Afternoon Deelites) led through a mile, setting splits of :23 2/5, :47
3/5, 1:13 2/5 and 1:39 3/5, but began fading leaving the backstretch. Kizzy’s
Chaos (Evansville Slew), who had been running in second, inherited the lead and posted 10
furlongs in 2:05 3/5, but by this time Stream Cat had begun picking off rivals.
The dark bay continued his momentum all the way to the wire and captured his
first stakes since July’s Arlington H. (G3).

Sent off the 9-2 third pick, Stream Cat was worth $11.40, $4.20 and $3.40 for
staving off the closing Big Booster (Accelerator), who paid $2.80 and $2.40
as the 6-5 favorite. It was another two lengths back to Medjool (Monarchos), who
returned $6.40 as the 19-1 longshot. The $1 exotics totaled $13.50 (exacta) and
$100 (4-1-2 trifecta). Fire Wood (Woodman), Kizzy’s Chaos, Dynamalt
(Dynaformer) and Zappa completed the order under the wire.

In addition to this one and the aforementioned Arlington H., Stream Cat owns
four other stakes wins, including the 2006 Crown Royal American Turf S. (G3) and
2005 Kentucky Cup Juvenile S. (G3). He’s placed in five graded events, including
the 2005 Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and last season’s Fayette S. (G3), and has now
accumulated $705,610 to go along with his 22-7-1-4 career mark.

Bred in Kentucky by Matthews Breeding and Racing Ltd., Stream Cat is out of
Water Course (Irish River [Fr]), who is a half-sister to 1975 Falls City H. (G3)
queen and Spinster S. (G1) runner-up Flama Ardiente (Crimson Satan). That mare
is the dam of multiple Grade 2-winning sire Mt. Livermore (Blushing Groom [Fr]) and Group
1 victor Magical Wonder (Storm Bird).

Stream Cat was purchased for $120,000 as a Keeneland September yearling
before RNAing at $125,000 as a Keeneland April two-year-old.
