Under a ground-saving ride by Jeremy Rose, Mitchell Ranch et al’s BULLSBAY (Tiznow)
shot through an opening along the rail at the top of the stretch and wore down a
determined Cool Coal Man (Mineshaft) in the final furlong to take the $170,400
Alysheba
S. (G3)
by three parts of a length. The 3-1 second choice in the field of
nine, Bullsbay returned $8.40, $4.60 and $3.60 while keying the $47.80 exacta,
$578.20 trifecta and $4,791.20 superfecta (5-4-6-10).

Bullsbay tracked in fifth during the early stages as Informed (Tiznow) led by
a length through a quarter in :24 2/5 and a half-mile in :48 3/5. Cool Coal Man,
who rated in second behind the leader, made his move around the far turn and was
up a head through six furlongs in 1:13 2/5. Opening up a length in the stretch,
Cool Coal Man was under a serious drive through the long stretch but could not
withstand the winner’s bid. The final time for 1 1/16 miles over the fast track
was 1:44 1/5.

Cool Coal Man, the 5-1 fourth choice, was a length clear in second under the
wire and returned $5.60 and $4.40. Star Guitar (Quiet American), a 23-1
outsider, was in third position virtually throughout the race and paid $7.80 to
show. Informed tired to fourth and was followed by Mambo in Seattle (Kingmambo),
5-2 favorite Macho Again (Macho Uno), Dr. Pleasure (Thunder Gulch), Prom Shoes
(Include) and Shift in Power (Monarchos). Ready Set (Touch Gold) was scratched.

Bullsbay began his career with trainer Eric Kruljac in California, but saw
his career take off when joining the barn of Graham Motion, who exposed the
five-year-old to the dirt tracks of Kentucky, Florida and Maryland. After taking
his first two starts on dirt during the 2008 Churchill fall meet, Bullsbay was a
solid second in the Hal’s Hope S. (G3) after breaking from post 13 in the
one-turn mile. Though eased in the Donn H. (G1) in his next start, Bullsbay
rebounded to finish second in the John B. Campbell H. at Laurel and later
captured the Harrison E. Johnson Memorial H. at the same venue. With this
initial graded stakes triumph, Bullsbay improved his record to 15-6-5-1,
$335,335.

Bred in Kentucky by Brad Anderson, Bullsbay was produced from the multiple
stakes-placed The Hess Express (Lord Carson), who is also responsible for stakes
winner Our Khrysty (Newfoundland), the unraced two-year-old filly Hidden
Expression (Yonaguska) and a 2009 filly by Lawyer Ron. This is the family of
1987 Acorn S. (G1) winner Grecian Flight (Cormorant).

Bullsbay was a $130,000 Keeneland September yearling in 2005.
