Dubawi colt sells for record price
at Arqana
Arqana’s latest Breeze-Up Sale proved a resounding success Saturday as once
again the top breezers attracted major sums and a new record price was set
alongside record figures. Twelve months after the sale-best €220,000 paid for a
Medaglia d’Oro filly, Willie Browne’s Mocklershill consignment produced a colt
who ticked all the boxes for Paul Nataf to go to €280,000 to prevail. Hip No.
111 is from the first crop of Darley’s Dubawi, and the March-foaled bay —
purchased for just 26,000 guineas at Tattersalls October — is a son of Lady Bex
(Sadler’s Wells), an unraced full sister to the listed scorers Ballarat (Ire)
and Hijaz (Ire).
Among the dam’s other siblings are the 2000 Prix du Conseil de Paris (Fr-G2)
hero Crimson Quest (Rainbow Quest), who went on to finish fourth in the Dubai
World Cup (UAE-G1); and listed winner and Prix Marcel Boussac (Fr-G1) fourth
Savethisdanceforme (Danehill Dancer).
Paul Basquin’s Haras du Saubouas, who was responsible for last year’s topper,
enjoyed another high-profile day’s selling and edged out Mocklershill and Bansha
House as leading vendor. Their top sale resulted in a handsome profit on the
Mizzen Mast colt consigned as Hip 64. Bought for €52,000 at Deauville last year,
the half-brother to Philip Newton’s listed-placed duo Maramba (Hussonet) and
Minnesota (Silver Hawk) was knocked down to Jean-Claude Rouget for €170,000. The
gray colt hails from the family of Sunday’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Fr-G1)
contender Shaweel (Dansili [GB]).
The clearance rate stood at a highly respectable 76 percent, while the
average and median improved on last year’s records. The former of €41,649 was up
by 20 percent, while the €30,000 median increased by seven percent.
