A well-matched field of eight will go one mile over the Polytrack at
Arlington in the $100,000 Hanshin Cup S. (G3) on Saturday. We’ve always had a fondness for
CHEROKEE ARTIST (Cherokee Run), and we’ll give a slight edge to the Graham
Motion trainee in here. The budding star was a runner right out of the gate and
finished second in both the Ohio Derby (G2) and Barbaro S. (G3) last summer.
He’s done well in 2009 against more talented runners than he’ll see today, and
his affinity for synthetic ovals should catapult him to his first graded
conquer. Jeremy Rose has the call.
VACATION (Dynaformer) has been consistent if nothing else and deserves a shot
to prove his case against this type of field for Shug McGaughey. The well-bred
four-year-old can run on any surface and is considered a must use in the exotics
by us. John Velazquez adds to the appeal.
Defending champ CORAGIL CAT (Forest Wildcat) earned a win in the Timeless
Native S. in advance of this and is a four-time winner here for Greg Geier.
We’re giving the tactical five-year-old a decent chance to retain his crown
under Diego Sanchez.
Grade 1 hero DOMINICAN (El Corredor) has just one victory since 2007 but ran
a better than it looks fourth in the Ben Ali S. (G3) in his seasonal debut for
Darrin Miller. If the five-year-old moves up in his second start off the shelf,
he can make noise late at a square price.
STONEHOUSE (Chester House) has won a trio of stakes races in succession for
Joe Broussard at three different venues and has never been better. The
five-year-old bay is no stranger to this oval, having compiled a 5-1-1-1 local
mark, and it would be unwise to dismiss such a sharp horse in this wide-open
event. AMAZING RESULTS (Grand Slam) is a dual stakes winner in as many efforts over
this Polytrack for Chris Block, and the colt exits a nice prep at Keeneland
leading up to this, finishing third in a six-furlong dash. The bay, who will be
guided by Rene Douglas, doesn’t have much early foot but does posses a solid
closing kick and could be in the mix with his best.
VOY PUR UNO MAS (Mazel Trick) was nearly 15-1 when wiring a group of
Illinois-bred runners last out over this surface, but this field will surely
test him much more, and we expect him to fold by midstretch. SPOTSGONE (Bright Launch) has a pair of tallies in four runs at this venue
and should be prominent from the outset for Jinks Fires. The talented, yet
inconsistent, bay would be a bit of a surprise if he were to win this, but we
can’t fault anybody taking a flier on the six-year-old at a price.
