Unbeaten champion ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) will make her much anticipated
2009 debut in the $150,000 Milady H. (G2) at Hollywood Park on Saturday. The
John Shirreffs pupil has won all nine of her starts in convincing fashion and
has fired bullets in the morning to signal her readiness. Mike Smith will pilot the
sublime mare, who looks too good in here.
If an upset is to occur it will likely come from the Shirreffs’ barn, as LIFE
IS SWEET (Storm Cat) is on the verge of greatness since coming to California.
The scintillating four-year-old has won three in succession following her trek
west, flying home in each race including a romp in the Santa Margarita
Invitational H.
(G1) last out. The presence of her stablemate is the sole reason why we’d
pick against this filly under Garrett Gomez.
DAWN AFTER DAWN (Successful Appeal) was an excellent second in the Churchill Distaff
Turf Mile S. (G2) last out for John Sadler and has posted a quartet of solid
efforts in a row leading into this affair. The five-year-old should be in third
or fourth early before being asked for her best and, if she fires, she’s the most
likely trifecta completer.
GAMBLER’S JUSTICE (Lit de Justice) is the inside speed of the race for
conditioner Bill Spawr and we think she could be in the superfecta at a big
price under Martin Garcia. The California-bred fought back after being passed by
a useful performer last time, and while the class rise in here is quite steep,
she might be well clear early and could hang around long enough to receive
graded black-type.
Recent Santa Lucia H. vixen CHAMPAGNE EYES (Flatter) looked sharp in her
seasonal debut for the white-hot Doug O’Neill and the bay might have room for
some improvement in her second outing in 15 months. The Kentucky-bred has some
early speed, and if she can dictate through tepid early splits, she could hang
around for third or fourth. Michael Baze will be in the irons.
ALLICANSAYIS WOW (Street Cry [Ire]) will almost surely be overbet some due to
her allowance prep win for Patrick Biancone, but she looks like another contender
with no early speed, and it seems impossible that she’ll outkick the top two.
We’ll omit the miss. HOT N’ DUSTY (Unusual Heat) is still eligible for a first-level allowance
race and seems best suited in that type of event. BEL AIR SIZZLE (Unusual Heat) has a win over the Cushion Track but has no
early speed and is far from the best closer in this one. We can’t endorse the
four-year-old. TASTE’S SIS (Marquetry) lacks consistency and is at least a few cuts below
the best in here.
