Gary and Cecil Barber’s RED ARROW (Aus) (Red Ransom) on Saturday accomplished
something he couldn’t do in his native Australia — win a graded stakes.
Breaking on top under Joe Talamo, Red Arrow led throughout to plunder the
$100,000
Los
Angeles H. (G3)
at Hollywood Park, crossing the wire three parts of a length
in front in a time of 1:08 4/5 for six furlongs over the Cushion Track. Trained
by John Sadler, Red Arrow returned $18.80, $9 and $6 at 8-1.

Paul’s Hope (Lake Austin) rated in midpack while Red Arrow set early splits
of :21 4/5 and :44 2/5, and his stretch kick fell just short at odds of 8-1. He
returned $9.80 and $6.20 while ending the $75.70 exacta ($1). Dehere Again (Aus)
(Dehere), the more fancied Aussie in the field at nearly 5-1, chased the winner
from second-place and yielded the runner-up spot in the final yards. Dehere
Again, three-quarters of a length in back of Paul’s Hope, gave back $5.60 and
finished the $521.50 trifecta ($1). A head further back was Grade 1 veteran
Siren Lure (Joyeux Danseur), who capped the $1 superfecta that returned
$3,585.60 (2-8-6-3). Next across the line were Guns On the Table (Carson City),
7-2 favorite Doppio (Gentlemen [Arg]), Northern Solider (Yankee Victor) and Soul
City Slew (Slew City Slew).

Red Arrow won once in 10 starts in Australia, finishing second in the Sir
John Monash S. and third in the Bletchingly S. (Aus-G3), both at Caulfield, in
his final two starts in his native land. Nearly four months after his Group
3-placing, Red Arrow finished third in his American debut over the Hollywood
turf on November 30. Red Arrow subsequently passed his first two allowance
conditions, then was a tiring fourth in the Golden Gate Sprint S. in his most
recent start, 5 1/2 lengths behind Siren Lure. Red Arrow’s record now stands at
15-4-2-3, $175,482.

Produced from the multiple Group 1 winner Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon [Ire]), Red
Arrow is a half-brother to Hong Kong stakes winner Able Choice (Dehere).
This family has also produced the Australian Group 3 heroines Miss Judgement
(Strategic) and Fifth Avenue Lady (Encosta de Lago). Red Arrow was bred down
under by Vinery Stud.
