Nominations for the 17th annual Dogwood Dominion Award are now being accepted
to honor an unsung hero in the Thoroughbred racing industry.
Nominees should be individuals who have had a positive effect on the
racing/breeding environment in which they are involved. This year’s winner will be honored at a luncheon on August 5 at the Saratoga
Reading Rooms and
presented with a $5,000 check and a bronze statue of Dominion. Judges for this
award are Anne
Campbell, Jay Hovdey and Todd Pletcher.
“It is hard to believe that the Dominion Award is now 17 years old. Dogwood
is very proud to have
established this annual award to salute the unsung heroes in our industry, and I
am certain that it has
focused great attention on the many wonderful, behind-the-scenes people that
make racing a good place in
which to pursue one’s career,” said Cot Campbell, Dogwood Stable President. “We’ve honored men and
women from every part of America and from many different backgrounds. As
individuals they have made colorful, creative and important contributions to
this sport that we all love.”
The award was inspired by multiple stakes winner Dominion, who was campaigned
by Dogwood Stable in the 1970s and then went on to become a five-time champion
sire in England. Upon Dominion’s death in 1993, Campbell created the award to
recognize the industry’s unsung heroes — the behind-the-scenes men and women
who work to create a positive influence in their work environment.
Nominations should be received no later than June 29 and be mailed or faxed
to: Mary Jane Howell, Dogwood Stable, P.O. Box 1549, Aiken, SC 29802. Fax:
803-642-2747.
