Doncaster Bloodstock Sales launches its St Leger Yearling Sales Tuesday, with
the auction cut to two days from three for the first time. Over the past 12
months, the sale has been advertised by the impressive success of Canford Cliffs
(Tagula) in Royal Ascot’s Coventry S. (Eng-G2) and the victory of the 50,000
guineas graduate Dim Sum (Kyllachy) in the Champion’s Sprint Prize (HK-G1) at
Sha Tin in February. That pair add to the success story of recent years
highlighted by the trio of consecutive Prix Morny (Fr-G1) heroes Dutch Art,
Myboycharlie (Ire) (Danetime) and Bushranger (Ire) (Danetime) and the first
three home in the 2007 Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) in Cockney Rebel,
Vital Equine and the aforementioned bargain purchase Dutch Art. Others to have
flown the flag include Excellent Art (GB), Kingsgate Native (Mujadil) and Dark
Angel.
As usual, the progeny of freshman sires are prominent among the 495 yearlings
on offer, and they include Ad Valorem, Aussie Rules, Byron, Cacique (Ire), Holy
Roman Emperor, Iffraaj, Ivan Denisovich, Shirocco (Ger), and Sleeping Indian
(GB).
“We are delighted with the quality of yearlings that we have cataloged in
2009,” DBS Managing Director Henry Beeby said. “The standard of horses has
improved again, and we are thrilled that vendors have chosen to sell some of
their better yearlings at this sale, which is universally recognized as a proven
source of Group 1 success and attracts the very best owners, trainers and agents
from throughout England, Ireland and further afield. The standard of the catalog
is unmatched and reflects the racecourse results that we have achieved in recent
years.
“Champion two-year-olds, Royal Ascot winners, Classic winners and future
stallions have all been bought at this sale, and we are confident that buyers
will find more of the same at the St Leger Yearling Sales in 2009, whilst this
is one of only two chances to buy a horse eligible for the
£3000,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes.”
