Wando’s first winner scores at Woodbine

Canadian Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year WANDO (Langfuhr) recorded
his first winner on Sunday when his juvenile son D’s Wando captured the 7TH race
at Woodbine in his third career try. With Emma-Jayne Wilson holding the reins,
the Ian Black trainee settled into midpack before putting in a rail bid exiting
the turn. Taking command in the stretch, the bay colt pulled off to secure a 1
1/4-length score while running seven furlongs on the Polytrack in 1:23 4/5.

Wando was a precocious juvenile himself. The Gustav Schickedanz homebred
broke his maiden at first asking in early July of his two-year-old season, and promptly followed up with a
7 3/4-length rout in the Vandal S. After just missing in the Summer S. (Can-G2)
on turf, Wando captured the Grey S. (Can-G2) by a widening 3 3/4 lengths.

The Michael Keogh-trained chestnut enjoyed his most productive campaign at
three. A close second in the Achievement H. in his sophomore debut, Wando
compiled a five-race winning streak, beginning with the Woodstock S. and Marine
S. (Can-G3), and continuing through the Canadian classics.

Wando dominated the prestigious Queen’s Plate S. in front-running fashion by
nine lengths, added the Prince of Wales S. to his resume by four lengths, and
lasted the 1 1/2 grassy miles of the Breeders’ S. to sweep the Canadian Triple
Crown. Fourth in the Atto Mile (Can-G1) and third in the Indiana Derby (G3) to
wrap up the year, he went on to land the Mt. Sassafras S. as a four-year-old.

Retired with $2,063,038 in earnings from a record of 23-11-2-2, Wando is a
full brother to Ontario Lassie S. winner Six Sexy Sisters. They are out of
Monmouth Oaks (G2) victress Kathie’s Colleen (Woodman), who is a half-sister to
Grade 1-winning millionaire and sire Beau Genius (Bold Ruckus). Wando hails from
the family of another Canadian Triple Crown champion, New Providence (Bull
Page), better remembered as the broodmare sire of Storm Bird.

The nine-year-old Wando stands at Lane’s End near Versailles, Kentucky, for
$5,000, live foal.
