CAPRICE (Ger) (Monsun) captured the Robert G. Dick Memorial H. (G3) going 1
3/8 miles on July 18, and will stay at that distance while taking on nine rivals
in Monday’s $100,000 Glens Falls H. (G3) at Saratoga. The Graham Motion trainee
has finished in the top four in all five starts this season, including another
victory in the 12-furlong La Zanzara H., and earned a 101 BRIS Speed rating for
her Robert G. Dick score. The six-year-old mare is no stranger to Saratoga,
finishing third against allowance/optional claiming runners last August, and
gets Edgar Prado in the saddle for this one. Caprice could offer nice value at
4-1 on the morning line.
WINTER VIEW (Thunder Gulch) strung together three straight victories,
including the Bewitch S. (G3) and All Along S. (G3), before having her streak
broken when 1 1/2 lengths back in sixth in the Robert G. Dick. The Jonathan
Sheppard charge will be out to turn the tables in this one, and owns the numbers
to get the job done under Julien Leparoux. She could also go off a nice price at
5-1 on the morning line.
ASTROLOGIE (Fr) (Polish Precedent) has run solid fourths in all three starts
this year, and could be ready to break through with a first U.S. win in this
spot. The four-year-old’s races this season came in the La Prevoyante H. (G2) at
1 1/2 miles, the nine-furlong All Along and the Robert G. Dick, so she’s been
holding her own with others in this field. Trained by turf pro Christophe
Clement, who’s sent out 22 percent graded winners this year, Astrologie could
pad that number with a win here. Ramon Dominguez has the call.
BUBBLY JANE (Brz) (Yagli) was a two-time Group 1 winner in her native Brazil
before shipping to the United States, and put in a late rally five wide to take
her stateside debut in the Donor S. The Paulo Lobo runner owns a 5-1-0 line from
six races on the grass and could continue to improve in her second start on U.S.
turf. She’ll be tough to withstand under Rajiv Maragh.
QUEEN OF HEARTS (Thunder Gulch) could infuse some value into the exotics.
Listed at 20-1 on the morning line, the James Jerkens runner broke her maiden
going nine furlongs at Belmont, then added a nose score in the 1 1/2-mile
Signature Stallions S. (formerly the Waya) at Saratoga. Her numbers aren’t quite
as high as our top picks, but she compares favorably with others entered in the
Glens Falls, so consider for the top three. TEJIDA (Rahy) is another who might
be worth a shot. The bay mare just missed by a head to Winter View in the All
Along, and was a rallying fourth in the Diana S. (G1) in her most recent race.
She earned a 117 BRIS Late Pace figure for that latter effort, and could come
charging down the lane to challenge with Corey Nakatani aboard.
MUSHKA (Empire Maker) is the 7-2 favorite on the morning line, but we just
can’t back the Bill Mott filly with confidence. That’s not to say she won’t grab part
in the gimmicks, but her one win from nine career turf tries isn’t very
encouraging. We’ll let her prove us wrong. LEMONETTE (Lemon Drop Kid) was a
two-length winner of the Gaily Gaily S. last out but her numbers just don’t
appear fast enough to challenge in this one. AVIE’S TALE (Tale of the Cat) made
her stakes bow a third in the John W. Rooney Memorial S. prior to running fifth
in the Robert G. Dick last out. She was switched to Clement following those efforts, and will be making her first start for that barn in
this race. We’ll
just watch to see how she handles the change in shedrow. COMMUNIQUE (Smart
Strike) has finished out of the top three in all but one of her four races this
season. We can’t recommend.
ZASKAR (GB) (Anabaa) and SHAKE THE MOON (Ger) (Loup Solitaire) will both need
to draw into the field from the also-eligible list. Of the two, Zaskar probably
holds the better chance of grabbing a small share of the purse.
