Donver Stable’s CARELESS JEWEL (Tapit) acted up in the paddock, then took the long way home in Saturday’s
$750,000

Cotillion S. (G2)
at Philadelphia Park, racing well off the rail under
Robert Landry while leading the field through splits of :22 4/5, :45 3/5, 1:09 1/5 and
1:34 3/5. The Josie Carroll charge continued her wide trip around the turn and
into the stretch, but was uncatchable while finishing up 1 1/16 miles on the
fast dirt in 1:41 2/5.

Sent off the 1-5 favorite in the six-horse field, Careless Jewel rewarded her
many supporters with $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10 while starting the $17.40 exacta.
Bon Jovi Girl (Malibu Moon) raced in last for the opening three-quarters then
rallied down the center of the track to take second, 3 1/2 lengths behind the
winner on the line, and paid $5.40 and $4.60 as the 13-1 fourth pick. Key Lime
Baby (Champali), the 59-1 longshot, returned $6.80 for finishing another 1 1/4
lengths back in third, and ended the $189.80 trifecta (1-5-3). Just Jenda
(Menifee), who had tracked in third for much of the race, was another three
parts of a length back in fourth and followed by Cat Moves (Tale of the Cat) and
Mary’s Follies (More Than Ready).

Careless Jewel began her career with a third at Keeneland on April 5, then
headed north to Canada, where she proceeded to break her maiden by 3 1/2 lengths
and take an allowance by 7 1/4 lengths. The gray lass made her stakes, and dirt,
bow in the Delaware Oaks (G2), leading gate-to-wire for a 7 1/4-length trouncing
on that occasion. She continued her win streak last out with a stellar 11-length
victory in the prestigious Alabama S. (G1) at Saratoga, and has now joined the
millionaire’s club, showing $1,013,346 in lifetime earnings. With this fifth
consecutive victory, the sophomore miss improved her career line to 6-5-0-1.

Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds and Bill Andrade, Careless Jewel
was purchased by her current connections for $40,000 as a Keeneland September
yearling and comes from an extensive black-type family. She is out of the
unraced Sweet and Careless (Hennessy), who has since produced an unnamed
juvenile colt by Orientate and a 2009 Elusive Quality colt. Sweet and Careless
is herself a half-sister to Subordination (Mt. Livermore), hero of the 1997
Hollywood Derby (G1) and 1998 Eddie Read H. (G1), as well as Grade 3-placed
stakes winner Domination (Prized).

Careless Jewel’s third dam is the stakes-placed Careless Notion (Jester), who
is responsible for 1990 Turf Classic (G1) victor Cacoethes (Alydar), who ran
second in the 1989 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. (Eng-G1) and Juddmonte
International S. (Eng-G1) as well as third in that year’s Epsom Derby (Eng-G1),
and Grade 1 queen Fabulous Notion (Somethingfabulous), herself the dam of 1997
Test S. (G1) winner Fabulously Fast (Deputy Minister). This is also the same
family as multiple stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Island Jamboree (Explodent),
dam of 1998 champion turf mare Fiji (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and Group 2 heroine
Capri (Generous).
