Jerry Jamgotchian’s SATANS QUICK CHICK (Sky Mesa) was ignored at 23-1
in the wagering for Saturday’s $300,000

Raven Run S. (G2)
at Keeneland, but she commanded everyone’s
attention when it counted. Uncorking a brazen late rally along the
inside, Satans Quick Chick snatched the victory by a half-length from
the 49-1 Slides Choice (Devil His Due), with the 41-1 Don’ttalktome
(Cactus Ridge) another half-length away in third. The winner returned $48.80, $23.80 and $15.60 and sparked an exotics bonfire. The exacta
paid $1,347.20, the trifecta swelled to $35,148.80, and the 3-9-14-4
superfecta ballooned to $118,602.40.

Not only was Satans Quick Chick earning her first stakes score, but
she also handed trainer Eric Reed and rider Leandro Goncalves their
first career graded stakes victories.

Satans Quick Chick was making her graded debut while simultaneously
cutting back in trip in the seven-furlong affair. Of her three prior
stakes attempts, her best result was a third in the Valdale S. at
Turfway Park in February, and she was coming off a troubled sixth in the
H.B.P.A. S. at Presque Isle Downs, where she was pinched back at the
break.

Satans Quick Chick got off to a similarly problematic start in the Raven Run,
again squeezed back and relegated to 13th in the 14-horse field for the first
quarter-mile. Up front, Moontune Missy (Forest Wildcat) set a heavily contested
pace, dueling with Jardin (Montbrook) through an opening quarter in :22.
Don’ttalktome, who had been chasing in fifth, moved up to challenge Moontune
Missy through a half in :44 4/5 and quickly spurted away. Satans Quick Chick was
also on the prowl, but she was caught in traffic on the inside and forced to
steady.

Don’ttalktome appeared to have poached a decisive advantage as she opened up
a two-length lead in midstretch. By this time, however, Slides Choice steadily
improved her position and emerged as a clear second, and Satans Quick Chick
found a seam and began making headway herself.

Inside the final sixteenth, Don’ttalktome’s lead evaporated. Slides Choice was
the first to overtake her, grabbing a narrow advantage, but Satans Quick Chick
was flying fastest of all. The bay got up in the shadow of the wire to stop the
teletimer in 1:22 3/5 on the Polytrack.

“I was very excited,” said Goncalves, who won three races on the day. “My
first graded stakes win ever. I’m very, very excited, very happy. Eric Reed told
me to break there and sit, save ground and when I get to the three-eighths pole
see where you’re at and find the best trip. He had confidence in me, and it
helped a lot.”

“It was unbelievable,” Reed said. “What a great day. I thought we were in
trouble on the turn, but Leandro gave her a great trip. The waters kinda parted
at the eighth-pole and here she came.”

“Man, that was a tough beat,” said Corey Lanerie, who rode Slides Choice. “I
had a perfect trip with her and it’s a shame she couldn’t get the win. For a
while I didn’t think I had a chance to catch that one that got away (Don’ttalktome),
but she gave me a really nice kick and I was able to get past her. Once I got by
that one, I was all smiles and thought I had the race won. Then out of the
corner of my eye I saw the three (winner Satans Quick Chick) coming and we just
got beat. But my filly ran a great race. She is a true grinder and has a lot of
heart.”

Slides Choice gave back $46.60 and $21.40, and Don’ttalktome yielded $18.60
to show. Another 1 3/4 lengths back in fourth came Pretty Prolific (Lion Heart).
Just Jenda (Menifee) wound up fifth in her attempt to give retiring trainer
Larry Jones a last hurrah at Keeneland. Best Lass (Werblin), Lady’s Laughter
(Distorted Humor), Sky Haven (Sky Mesa), Strike the Bell (Mizzen Mast), Ivory
Empress (Seeking the Gold), Moontune Missy, 2-1 favorite Flashing (A.P. Indy),
All of Her Twist (Forest Wildcat) and Jardin completed the order of finish. The
also-eligibles Saucey Evening (More Than Ready) and Devil by Design (Medaglia
d’Oro) were scratched.

“It’s disappointing,” Richard Migliore, Flashing’s rider, said. “She broke
well and I was happy with the position we were in. I took her out and she fought
for a quarter of a mile, but we got bounced around quite a bit. She never really
took hold. She just didn’t run her race.”

Satans Quick Chick boosted her bankroll to $252,229 from her 9-4-0-1 line.
All of her victories have come on synthetic surfaces. Since breaking her maiden
sprinting 6 1/2 Polytrack furlongs at Turfway in January, she has been competing
at distances of at least a mile. She captured two allowances on the Tapeta at
Presque Isle Downs over the summer, including an 8 1/2-length romp in a
track-record 1:39 for one mile and 70 yards.

Bred by Hargus and Sandra Sexton in Kentucky, Satans Quick Chick brought
$37,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She is out of the Grade 2-placed
Dancing Devlette (Devil’s Bag), making her a half-sister to Grade 3 winner
Pratella (Jade Hunter), herself the dam of stakes scorer and Grade 2-placed Angliana (Giant’s
Causeway). Satans Quick Chick is also a half-sister to multiple stakes winner
Satan’s Code (Polish Numbers); Dancing Pratella (Rahy), the dam of Canadian
Grade 3 winner Blue Sky Holiday (Victory Gallop); as well as an unraced juvenile
colt named Nabil (Smarty Jones).

Satans Quick Chick’s second dam is Grade 2 queen Terpsichorist (Nijinsky II),
and her third dam is Irish champion *Glad Rags II (High Hat), heroine of the
1966 One Thousand Guineas. Among the family’s many notable performers is
multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Colonial Affair (Pleasant Colony), winner
of the 1993 Belmont S. (G1).
