Saturday’s $100,000 Spend a Buck H. (G3) has attracted virtually every
notable older horse stabled at Calder. The one who stood out from the pack prior
to a recent trip to Pennsylvania was MOTOVATO (Proud Citizen), who is our
selection to reassert his superiority over the field in this 1 1/16-mile test.
Motovato has won three of four over the Calder main track, including the
Sumter and Primal overnight stakes earlier in the year. His lone setback was not
much of one — a second in the Memorial Day H. (G3) — and his local BRIS Speed
ratings of 107, 101, 102 and 103 are hard to look past. Trainer Marty Wolfson
sent him on the road last month for the Presque Isle Mile, and the
four-year-old unsurprisingly floundered over the Tapeta. Back on dirt, he should
be difficult to beat.
The Spend a Buck wildcard is the filly LADY SHATZI (Per) (Privately Held) who
invades from Peru, where she is considered a superstar. Not only did she win the
Group 1 equivalents of the Oaks and Derby in that country, but also beat older
males in the Clasico Jockey Club del Peru (Per-G1). This Peruvian version of
Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d’Oro) was facing horses who would probably be only
of allowance quality in this country, but she does add a lot of intrigue to this
race and might be better than expected.
MAMBO MEISTER (King Cugat) has been doing some of his best work of late on
turf, running second in the Fourstardave H. (G2) and Miami Mile (G3), but he
possesses a stellar 7-4-1-1 mark over the Calder main track and should
appreciate the step down in class here. Her cruised by 4 3/4 lengths in his last
trip over the track in the May 16 Big Bubble S.
DREAM MAESTRO (Concerto) was a close second to Motovato in the Sumter and
third in the Memorial Day earlier in the meet. Since returning from a summer
break he’s been running exclusively in sprints, and we think he’ll be much
better stretching out around two-turns.
The three-year-olds CINNAMON ROAD (Delaware Township) and TEMO’S DREAM (Pure
Precision) finished in that order in the September 26 Needles S. over the course
and distance. We’re not quite convinced either is ready to step up and beat
stakes-quality older horses, though both have plenty of early speed and will
take some catching. The field’s other sophomore, STATELY CHARACTER (Pleasant
Tap), last visited the winner’s circle more than a year ago when taking the
Foolish Pleasure S. He hasn’t started since trailing the Peter Pan S. (G2) in
May. Both Temo’s Dream and Stately Character are also cross-entered to the
Calder Derby (G3) one race prior.
HEY BYRN (Put It Back), IMAWILDANDCRAZYGUY (Wild Event), PECHITO (Arg) (Interprete)
and COLONIAL CAUSEWAY (Giant’s Causeway) all look to be running for a minor
award based on current form. HAL’S MY HOPE (Halo’s Image) is 3-for-47 lifetime
and has lost 31 in a row, so he’s an easy toss (famous last words).
