Cape Cross filly highlights November sale

Goffs’ November Sale rumbled on Thursday with another increase in the tempo
witnessed as a daughter of Cape Cross (Ire) was the highlight of the third foal
session.

Consigned by the Irish National Stud, Hip No. 618 is out of the listed-placed
Lia (Desert King), whose daughter Lake Palace (Nayef) ran second in Thursday’s
Prix Solitude at Fontainebleau and whose two-year-old son Lui Seul (Dubawi)
recently got off the mark at Deauville. From the family of Group 1 scorers
Latice (Ire) and Lawman (Fr), whose first foals are selling this week, she was
knocked down to Rathmore Stud for 76,000.

“We were chuffed to bits to get her,” said David Redvers, who pinhooks in
partnership with Rathmore’s Peter Molony. “She’s a really lovely filly and a
rare bit of value today. Obviously, she had some very good updates in her family
and the two-year-old Lui Seul was impressive in winning his maiden and looks a
potential stakes horse.

“The last Cape Cross filly that we bought was Rising Cross (GB), who went on
to finish second in the (Epsom) Oaks (Eng-G1). This filly could be for resale
back here, although that has yet to be decided.”

Topping the colts’ category on the day was Hip 565, a Clodovil half-brother
to recent Summer S. (Can-G3) third Fantastico Roberto (Ire) (Refuse to Bend
[Ire]) from Maurice Burns’ Rathasker Stud. It was Brendan Holland from Grove
Stud who won the day with a bid of 74,000.

“He was an absolute beauty,” Holland opined. “I’ve bought him with Jim
McCartan, and we remembered his yearling half-sister from Tattersalls Ireland in
September (a filly by Mujadil which made 62,000).
She was a queen and has gone to Kevin Prendergast, which is a big help. Also,
this colt has come from a very good home in Rathasker.”

Pivotal is never far from the headlines and his colt from Bill Dwan’s
Castlebridge Consignment was in demand before selling for
70,000. Hip 531 is out of 1997 All Along S.
(G2) scorer Beyrouth (Alleged), who has thrown the stakes-placed Air Adair
(Storm Cat), and was snapped up by the O’Callaghan’s Yeomanstown Stud.

As expected, the better-bred foals resulted in higher average, median and
clearance rate than the previous two days, but comparisons to 2008 can only be
drawn at the close of play. Selling concludes Friday and full results may be
found on www.goffs.com.
