Seven juvenile fillies will be asked to endure 1 1/8 miles in Saturday’s
$200,000 Demoiselle S. (G2) at Aqueduct. PROFITEROLES (Afleet Alex), coupled in
the wagering with IN THE ROUGH (Stormy Atlantic), finished well in a one-mile
maiden conquer and should relish the added ground on this occasion. The dark bay
Kentucky-bred should be in the mix early beneath Joe Bravo, who treks up for
this test. The January foal is a live contender with any improvement.
FUZZY BRITCHES (Pollard’s Vision) placed in both the Sorority S. and Miss
Grillo S. and should be the early leader in here with the added ground. The dark
bay miss screamed a bullet five panels leading up to this affair and could be
very dangerous if allowed to dictate through moderate splits. We’ll use the
filly in all exotics wagers.
TIZAHIT (Tiznow) closed fast to finish a good second in the Blue Hen S. two
back and was a non-threatening fourth in the Tempted S. (G3) last out for
trainer George Weaver. The dark bay dons a pedigree that screams route, and
while her lack of early zip will leave her with work to do in the lane, her
fitness level should keep her from tiring more than her foes.
PROTESTING (A.P. Indy) was an emphatic five-length heroine of a maiden test
on the Polytrack at Keeneland and will hope to parlay that into a graded win in
her black-type debut for Shug McGaughey. The blue-blooded dark bay showed
promise on the dirt in her first three outings and should move up with the added
distance under Eddie Castro. We’re not thrilled about the fact that John
Velazquez chose elsewhere and that this one is almost assured of being overbet,
so we’ll try to knock her off.
In the Rough, who picks up the services of Velazquez, romped over six rivals
in the slop at Meadowlands in her maiden breaker most recently and will hope to
build on that for conditioner Kelly Breen. The Virginia-bred miss should be able
to handle this distance and she isn’t facing that much of a field in here, so we
consider the bay a threat.
OH DIANE (Stephen Got Even) just got up to beat a $25,000 maiden claiming
cast and would be a surprise in her first off the claim for Gary Contessa. MISS
AFLEET ALEX (Afleet Alex) made short work of a maiden group at Remington Park
last out, earning a moderate 78 BRIS Speed figure, and must prove that she
belongs in the Empire State. We’re looking elsewhere.
