Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2) is the co-feature on the Stars of
Tomorrow II program at Churchill Downs and serves as a launching spot for 2010
Kentucky Derby (G1) hopefuls. THISKYHASNOLIMIT (Sky Mesa) likes the oval,
registering a one-length score in the Iroquois S. (G3) earlier in the meet, and
the Steve Asmussen trainee is the choice over his eight rivals.
A seven-length maiden winner at Churchill in early July, Thiskyhasnolimit
faltered when making his stakes debut in the Saratoga Special (G2), finishing
last after a slow start, but offered a better showing when third in the
seven-furlong Futurity (G2) next out. The dark bay rallied boldly to the lead in
upper stretch of the one-mile Iroquois and easily held sway to the wire,
registering very respectable BRIS Speed (96) and Late Pace (97) ratings, and the
stretch out to 1 1/16 miles looks comfortably within his scope. Robby Albarado
picks up the mount on the improving colt.
SUPER SAVER (Maria’s Mon) will have to be caught. Trained by Todd Pletcher,
the speedster rolled to a seven-length maiden score at Belmont two back and set
the pace in the Champagne S. (G1) last time before weakening to fourth. He
was beaten only two lengths in his stakes debut, though, and the well-bred colt
figures to relish the added ground on Saturday. The bay could catch some
pressure from his outside, but he still looms as a serious wire-to-wire threat
under new rider Calvin Borel.
WORLDLY (A.P. Indy) is out of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Urbane (Citidancer)
and counts multiple Grade 2-winning millionaire Suave as a full brother. The
Paul McGee-conditioned colt graduated in a third career start earlier in the
meet, gamely capturing an 8 1/2-furlong maiden special weight event in his
two-turn debut, and there’s plenty of room for improvement with the promising
youngster. He could find his seasoned rivals too tough at this stage, but
we’ll look for a solid run from the stalker that nets a minor award.
WILLIAM’S KITTEN (Kitten’s Joy) was no factor in his last two starts over
synthetic tracks, checking in eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) most
recently, and will look to do better in the switch-back to dirt. The Mike Maker
runner drew clear to a 4 3/4-length victory in the off-the-turf Sunday Silence S.
three starts back, but he earned only an 81 BRIS Speed rating that afternoon. We
have some class concerns in this spot, but we won’t be surprised to see him grab
part under Miguel Mena.
CALLIDE VALLEY (Indian Charlie) will look to parlay a stalking trip into a
top three finish, and the Eddie Kenneally pupil exits a fine showing over the
track, winning a 1 1/16-mile allowance earlier in the meet. We question the
company he defeated last time, but the bay colt is eligible to keep moving
forward. Consider for the bottom of the exotics. MR. SATURDAYNIGHT (Grand
Reward) has been transferred to Dale Romans and will make his first start on
dirt here. He exits a couple of solid showings versus allowance and maiden
special weight rivals, but we’re inclined to give the West Coast shipper a race
on new ground.
GLEAM OF HOPE (City Zip) didn’t beat much when capturing the off-the-turf
Cradle S. two back and may find this company too difficult to make an impact.
ACTIVITY REPORT (Bernstein) figures to show speed from his outside post, but
nothing in his running lines suggests that he can challenge in the latter
stages. KING SNAKE (Midas Eyes) will take a drastic class hike off a maiden special
weight victory at Mountaineer Park. We’ll give him a race against winners.
