Grade 2 heroine CARLSBAD (Rocky Bar) suffered a fatal injury following a
seven-furlong workout Saturday morning at Santa Anita and was euthanized,
Daily Racing Form reports.
Trainer Jeff Mullins told DRF that the three-year-old filly suffered
an open fracture of her right ankle on the clubhouse turn after completing her
workout, which was timed in 1:26.80. Carlsbad was euthanized on the racetrack by
veterinarian Melinda Blue.
The dark bay filly was preparing for an upcoming engagement in next
Saturday’s La Brea S. (G1) on Santa Anita’s opening day.
Carlsbad captured six stakes, including three graded events, during her
racing career. In addition to the Hollywood Oaks (G2), the lass scored in the
Rancho Bernardo H. (G3) and Santa Paula S. (G3) this season, as well as placed
in the Railbird S. (G3) and Thoroughbred Club of America S. (G2). The latter
event was her final start.
