Seven juvenile fillies will vie in the closing-day feature at Hollywood Park
on Sunday, the $405,250 Hollywood Starlet S. (G1), and Oak Leaf S. (G1) star BLIND
LUCK (Pollard’s Vision) could make a case for divisional honors by picking up
her second Grade 1 win for Jerry Hollendorfer. The talented chestnut was a fine
third as the favorite in the recent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile fillies (G1) and is
training well in advance of this. She owns the best BRIS numbers, and Rafael Bejarano will replace Tyler Baze aboard
the likely favorite.
ROSE CATHERINE (Speightstown) rates nearly as high as our top pick and is one
we’ll use in our multi-race plays for trainer Todd Pletcher. Winless in her
first pair of tries, the expensive dark bay exploded when transferred to the
lawn, breaking her maiden by eight lengths and finishing an ultra-game second in
the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. While this is a rise in class from her
latest outing, the filly has recorded 96 and 98 BRIS Speed numbers in her last
pair and could lead this field at every call. Javier Castellano treks west to
guide the Kentucky-bred.
BEAUTICIAN (Dehere) has put in a fine freshman campaign for Ken McPeek,
placing in three graded affairs including a fine runner-up in the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The gray Kentucky-bred seems equally adept
at handling dirt or synthetic ovals, she is quite tractable, and the lass will
add both blinkers and jockey Garrett Gomez for this one. She is only a maiden
winner, but must be regarded as a logical contender for it all from the widest post.
IT TIZ (Tiznow) has earned triple-digit BRIS Late Pace figures in three
straight and is another who could rally for a piece from off the pace. The
consistent filly has never finished worse than fourth in her career, with both
fourth-place results coming in Grade 1 affairs, and we think her third last out
should have her primed for a big run on this occasion. Joel Rosario will guide
the Mark Glatt trainee.
MISS HEATHER LEE (Trippi) has run two good ones since being acquired by
trainer Bob Baffert and is well drawn on the rail in this test. Primarily a
sprinter to this point, the California-bred chestnut was second best behind
BICKERSONS (Silver Deputy) last out and will likely have a lot of speed to run at late, so we’ll
toss her in our vertical exotics. AMEN HALLELUJAH (Montbrook) was a good third when last seen in the Alcibiades
S. (G1) at Keeneland and rates as a potential exotics threat for Richard Dutrow.
The Florida-bred has registered some fine BRIS Speed numbers in her last four
outings — 92, 93, 106 and 89 — but we still view her as a sprinting type and don’t
envision her hanging on late beneath Alex Solis.
Moccasin S. heroine Bickersons is twice Grade 1-placed and
looked sharp last out, but we don’t envision the Kelly Breen pupil getting away
easy in here and will look elsewhere. However, we won’t be shocked to see her
outperform our expectations with further improvement.
