An intriguing field of sophomore prospects will vie in the $150,000 Robert B.
Lewis S. (G2) at Santa Anita on Saturday. The talented AMERICAN LION (Tiznow), a
half-length winner of the Hollywood Prevue S. (G3) in his latest run, could be a
special one and we’ll tab him for a score for conditioner Eoin Harty. The bay
colt was a good second in his debut, and returned with a smashing 6 3/4-length
maiden romp at Keeneland prior to a score in his graded debut. The colt has good
tactical speed, is bred to run at least this long and attracted Eclipse
Award-winning pilot Julien Leparoux to trek west and ride.
Dual stakes winner MACIAS (Pulpit) grabbed the grassy Eddie Logan S. in his
previous try for trainer Bob Baffert and has been a consistent performer
throughout his five-race career. The dark bay is in great form and is well drawn
on the inside, so we won’t discount the chances of the Kentucky-bred at a fair
price.
TIZ CHROME (Tiznow) has been very impressive in a pair of dominating wins to
begin his career and gets a true test of class on this day for Bob Baffert.
Purchased privately after a fine debut win at Churchill Downs, the
ultra-talented bay proved that he can run on a synthetic oval when taking the
Stuka S. in facile fashion, dusting his foes late. If the colt handles the class
rise and added distance, which we think that he can, he could be right there
late under Garrett Gomez.
Unbeaten California-bred CARACORTADO (Cat Dreams) is perfect from four runs,
all by fairly comfortable margins for conditioner Michael Machowsky. The gelded
chestnut passed his two-turn test last out with a tally in the California
Breeders’ Champion S. last out and has posted a quartet of maintenance works in
advance of this. We’ll use this one in our multi-race plays at an expected
decent number.
DAVE IN DIXIE (Dixie Union) was among the most impressive first-out winners
in all of the Golden State last year, and the John Sadler pupil seems destined
for big things in his three-year-old campaign. A closing sixth in the Norfolk S.
(G1) in his juvenile finale, the Kentucky-bred has trained well in the interim
and should be moving late with Joel Rosario.
San Rafael S. (G3) third DOMONATION (Maria’s Mon) has run well without
proving to be up to the standards of a few in here, so we will include the John
Sadler charge in the lower rungs in some of our vertical plays. TANGO TANGO
(Orientate) recently captured a first-level allowance race in his fourth sprint
try at Golden Gate, and he would need big improvement to finish in the top three
here.
