A well-matched field will travel nine panels in the $200,000 Strub S. (G2) at
Santa Anita on Saturday, and we’re looking outside for our exacta.

MISREMEMBERED (Candy Ride [Arg]), a ridgling co-owned, bred and trained by
Bob Baffert, turned out to be a consistently good performer in his
three-year-old season in 2009, posting a 9-4-3-0 mark that included wins in the
Swaps S. (G2) and Indiana Derby (G2). Second in the Malibu S. (G1) and Clark H.
(G2) in his last two, the four-year-old posted a trio of bullet works from his
five drills in readying for this test and seems poised to put together a big
showing on this occasion beneath Victor Espinoza.

MASSONE (Menifee) often settles for minor awards, but that’s all we’re hoping
for from the blue-collar chestnut in this heat. Trained by Ron McAnally, the
colt has enough tactical speed to stay within range early and has a nice closing
punch that should be well suited to this distance beneath Joel Rosario.

Del Mar Derby (G2) upsetter RENDEZVOUS (Victory Gallop) was a solid third in
the San Fernando S. (G2) and continues to run well for trainer Jerry
Hollendorfer. The Kentucky-bred has just one win from his last 10 starts and
might be a cut below a few in here, but the good post position (2) coupled with
the fact that the added ground should only benefit him makes him a live exotics
threat under Rafael Bejarano.

Damascus S. winner SMART BID (Smart Strike) was a good second in the San
Fernando last out and will hope to get another sixteenth of a mile in here for
trainer Graham Motion. The dark bay colt has won over this oval and is clearly a
better runner at four, so he could surely get a piece of the pie with something
near his best.

We’re intrigued by the late-running VISCOUNT (Orientate) in here for Baffert
and could envision this one rallying for a small award beneath Garrett Gomez.
The chestnut was a sneaky good fourth in the San Fernando last out behind a
moderate tempo, and if the extra ground gets him closer turning for home, he
could be in the mix down the lane at a square price.

EAGLE POISE (Empire Maker) has steadily improved since shipping up north to
Woodbine to race on their synthetic oval. The four-year-old has been first or
second in all six all-weather tries and has stood up well with stakes runners in
his previous two black-type events, so we consider him a viable contender in
here for Bill Mott.

The hard-trying GALLANT SON (Malabar Gold) has run his better races over turf
in recent times and has never placed in four Pro-Ride outings at Santa Anita, so
we’ll look elsewhere.

Turf Paradise invader HEAVENLY WIND (Heavenly Search) is questionable from a
class perspective and he’s been beyond six panels just once in his career, so we
can’t back him in his Southern California debut for new trainer Robert Hess Jr.

SQUARE EDDIE (Smart Strike), who sustained a suspensory injury, and
DIFERENTKINDAGREAT (Canadian Frontier) were both scratched.
