Live Oak Plantation’s homebred DYNASLEW (Dynaformer) seized the lead shortly
after the start of Saturday’s $100,000
Beaugay
S. (G3) and led wire-to-wire over the firm inner turf at Belmont Park. An
allowance/optional claiming winner when opening her four-year-old season at
Gulfstream Park in her previous outing, the Seth Benzel-trained four-year-old
captured her graded debut by 3 1/4 lengths under Eibar Coa, completing the 1
1/16-mile distance in 1:42 1/5.
“When I spoke to Seth this morning he was more concerned about the post
parade,” Coa said. “She’s very nervous, very jumpy, so he just told me to warm
her up and try to find a way to relax her. That’s what I did, she was fine, and
in the race she was very professional.”
Off as the near 7-2 third choice among eight rivals, the dark bay filly paid
$8.90, $3.90 and $4.20. Scolara (Quiet American) easily grabbed runner-up honors
as the near 7-2 second choice and gave back $3.30 and $2.80. It was two lengths
back to the 19-1 Chestoria (Chester House), who totaled $5.80 for show. The
exacta returned $34.40, the trifecta was worth $311.50 and the 6-3-4-8
superfecta paid $620.
My Princess Jess (Stormy Atlantic), the 8-5 favorite, lacked a rally in the
stretch drive and wound up fourth. Miss World (Bernstein), Liberally (Ire)
(Statue of Liberty), Strike the Bell (Mizzen Mast) and Pumpkin Shell (Lion
Heart) came next under the wire.
Dynaslew was making just her second start for Benzel here after transferring
from the barn of Bill Mott. The lass ran fifth in her three prior attempts
against stakes company, and now owns a 10-4-3-0, $191,252, career mark.
“I couldn’t have drawn the race up any better. Eibar was a lot more patient
than I was. It was a great ride,” Benzel said. “She came to us in December.
She’s the type of filly where less is more; she keeps herself very fit in
between races, and all we have to do is keep her happy. We’ll look at a race
like the (June 5) Just a Game (G1).”
The first registered foal out of multiple stakes winner and Grade 2-placed
Slews Final Answer (Seattle Slew), Dynaslew is a half-sister to the juvenile
colt Slews Big Finale (Ghostzapper). This is the immediate female family of
Grade 3 winner Palmeiro (Pleasant Tap) and, further back, Grade 1 queen Try
Something New (Hail the Pirates).
