Hour Glass rallies up rail for Vagrancy

The time was right for Hour Glass to win her first graded race (Ross Woodson/Horsephotos.com)

Mill House’s HOUR GLASS (Petionville) shot through an opening at the rail in
the stretch and surged late to win Saturday’s $140,000
Vagrancy
H. (G2) by a half-length. Second in the Distaff H. (G2) in her previous
outing, the Todd Pletcher-trained filly notched her first graded triumph when
completing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16 3/5 over the fast Belmont Park track and has
now earned $263,500 from a 9-5-3-0 career line.

Rightly So (Read the Footnotes) sprinted to the fore when the gates opened
and established quick opening splits of :21 4/5 and :44 2/5 as Hour Glass rated
near the back of the six-horse field along the inside. Jockey David Cohen came
off the fence to split horses approaching the stretch and quickly darted back to
the inside to go after pacesetter in the final furlong. With Tar Heel Mom
(Flatter) also rallying boldly on the far outside, it appeared that anyone of
the three could win in deep stretch, but Hour Glass had the most momentum and
was clearly going best under the wire.

Off as the 7-2 third choice, the winner paid $9.30, $4.90 and $2.50. Rightly
So, the 12-1 fifth choice, gamely out-finished Tar Heel Mom by a neck for the
place and returned $10.60 and $4.80. Tar Heel Mom was good for $2.50 as the
second choice and was followed under the wire by Saarlight (Saarland), 8-5
favorite Malibu Prayer (Malibu Moon) and Hold That Prospect (Hold the Tiger).
The exacta totaled $79 and the 2-1-3 trifecta was $219.50.

Bred in Kentucky by Roasting Ear Ranch, Hour Glass sold for $42,000 as a 2007
Keeneland September yearling. The four-year-old is the first foal to race out of
the unraced Suzanna Anna (Tale of the Cat), who is also the dam of 2009 Bassinet
S. heroine All About Anna (Maria’s Mon), a yearling colt by El Corredor and a
2010 filly by Grand Slam. This is the immediate female family of Grade 2 queen
Miss Indy Anna (Apalachee) and Grade 3 victor Wanna Runner (El Corredor).
