SALTY STRIKE (Smart Strike) and JUST :LOUISE (Five Star Day) are the top two
contenders in Saturday’s $100,000 Debutante S. (G3) at Churchill Downs and we’ll
give a slight edge to the latter, who figures to offer a little more value. A
debut winner on May 28, Just Louise missed the break that afternoon, hopping at
the start, but quickly jumped back into the frame following the tardy beginning,
splitting rivals on the far turn and powering to a clear lead entering the
stretch. The Dale Romans-trained chestnut won easily by a 3 1/4-length margin,
netting a respectable 91 BRIS Speed rating for her effort, and figures to
improve off that run. with a returning Robby Albarado. We’ll look for her to
sit close before pouncing.
Salty Strike posted an impressive 4 1/4-length score in her career bow on May
14, and the second- and third-place finishers have both come back to win their
respective
next starts. The Kenny McPeek trainee displayed an excellent turn of foot from
the start, registering a 100 BRIS E2 Pace number in her front-running romp, and
her 96 Speed rating is second to none in Saturday’s seven-horse field. The dark
bay does lose Albarado to Just Louise, but the addition of Calvin Borel isn’t a
negative for the speedy miss. She’s an obvious wire-to-wire threat from the rail
as the likely favorite.
TATER TAUNTER (Consolidator) closed well to win going away in her career
debut, recording a 17-1 upset 21 days ago, and we give her a chance to make a
small impact here from off the pace. The Allen Crupper pupil shows two works in
the short interim and Corey Nakatani will be back in the boot. With plenty of
speed signed on, the dark bay lass offers appeal for the exotics.
INTERNET CAFE (Freefourinternet) will make her stakes debut off back-to-back
allowance and maiden special weight scores at Churchill. The John Hancock filly
hasn’t registered the best Speed numbers so far, but she’s eligible to keep
improving and has shown an affinity for the track. She’s a top contender for a
minor placing with Oriana Rossi.
BIG SWEETS (American Champ) exits a smart debut win at Prairie Meadows for
Don Roberson and will be rolling from the start here beneath Alex Solis. We
won’t be surprised to the Texas-bred hold for a minor award, but she may face
too much pressure.
Woodbine shipper TRISTANME (Bwana Charlie) will make her dirt debut for Steve
Asmussen. She went wire-to-wire over the Polytrack last time, but she’ll likely
revert to rating tactics with Shaun Bridgmohan. We’ll give her a race against
winners. BACH HAMILTON (Cherokee Run) takes a steep class hike following an easy
win over maiden claimers. We can’t recommend her chances.
