Sire WITH APPROVAL, a Canadian Triple Crown winner and Horse of the
Year in 1989, died June 21 in England at 24. He had stood at Kirsten Rausing’s
Lanwades Stud in Newmarket since 2006.
“We will greatly miss With Approval at Lanwades,” Rausing said. “He was a true gentleman to
work with; very fertile and a most attractive horse. We hope that the several
fillies he sired whilst at Lanwades will continue to keep his name in lights,
both whilst racing and in the future, as broodmares.”
After concluding his perfect juvenile season with a victory in the 1988
Display S., With Approval became the first Canadian Triple Crown winner in 26
years when sweeping the Queen’s Plate S., Prince of Wales S. and Breeders’ S.
the following season. He competed mostly in the United States at four, winning
the Bowling Green H. (G2) and Tidal H. (G2), and established a new world record
when capturing the 1 3/8-mile Bowling Green on turf in 2:10 1/5. Trained
throughout his career by Roger Attfield, With Approval also finished second in
the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), Arlington Million (G1) and Sword Dancer H. (G1),
and he retired with earnings of $2,863,540 from a 23-13-5-1 line.
The son of Caro (Ire) started his stud career at Live Oak Farm in Florida
(1991–96), from where he moved to Brookdale Farm in Kentucky (1997–2005) before
concluding his stud career at Lanwades, where he covered mares this year. His
offspring have earned more than $45 million.
Top performers include Canadian champion Talkin Man, multiple Grade 2 winner
T. H. Approval, Grade 2 scorer Lasting Approval, multiple Grade 3 winners
Mission Approved and Silverfoot, and Grade 3 victors Tasteyville and Sky
Approval.
Bred in Ontario by owner Kinghaven Farms, With Approval hailed from the
Canadian Broodmare of the Year Passing Mood (Buckpasser) and was a half-brother
to 1997 Belmont S. (G1) winner and sire Touch Gold (Deputy Minister).
